Abstract Deep cervical infections in children are relatively uncommon and often require prolonged antibiotic therapy. The organism may not be isolated, in which case it is necessary to cover Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms as well as anaerobes. During treatment continued vigilance is required to detect abscess formation, with ultrasound providing a useful tool for this purpose.
