    Notes: Summary The lipids of a thermophilic chemolithotroph,Metbanobacterium thermoautotropbicum, have been analyzed by chromatographic techniques and identified by infrared spectrometry and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Of the total chloroform soluble lipids 79% and 21% are polar and non-polar lipids, respectively. The major components of the polar lipids are dialkyl ethers of glycerol or its derivatives. The nature of the glycerol ether alkyl groups was found to be that of the saturated tetraisoprenoid hydrocarbon phytane. The non-polar lipids of the chloroform soluble fraction consist principally of three series of C20, C25 and C30 acyclic isoprenoid hydrocarbons, the major components being squalene and a continuous range of hydrosqualene derivatives, from dihydrosqualene up to and including decahydrosqualene. These data establish thatM. tbermoautotropbicum contains predominantly non-sapo-nifiable lipids as doHalobacterium, Halococcus, Sulfolobus andTbermoplasma. In particular, the composition of the chloroform soluble lipids ofM. tbermoautotropbicum is quite similar to that ofHalobacterium cutirubrum. The results strongly support the recent proposal, based on 16S rRNA sequence homologies, that the extreme halophiles and methanogens share a common ancestor. In addition, it is pointed out that the occurrence of phytane and related polyisoprenoid compounds in ancient sediments can no longer be considered unequivocally as indicative of past photosynthetic activity. Finally, speculations are made concerning the possible role of and evolutionary significance of the presence of squalene and hydrosqualenes in these organisms. To our knowledge this is the first report of squalene and hydrosqualenes in a strictly anaerobic microorganism.

    Notes: Summary Cosmochemical considerations suggest various potential sources for the accumulation of organic matter on Mars. However the Viking Molecular Analysis did not indicate any indigenous organic compounds on the surface of Mars. Their disappearance from the top layer is most likely caused by the combined action of the high solar radiation flux and various oxidizing species in the Martian atmosphere and regolith. In this study the stability of several organic substances and a sample of the Murchison meteorite was tested under simulated Martian conditions. After adsorption on powdered quartz, samples of adenine, glycine and naphthalene were irradiated with UV light at various oxygen concentrations and exposure times. In the absence of oxygen, adenine and glycine appeared stable over the given irradiation period, whereas a definite loss was observed in the case of naphthalene, as well as in the volatilizable and pyrozable content of the Murchison meteorite. The presence of oxygen during UV exposure caused a significant increase in the degradation rate of all samples. It is likely that similar processes have led to the destruction of organic materials on the surface of Mars.

    Notes: Summary The amino acid composition and the pyrolyzable organic content of the Antarctic Allan Hills meteorite (ALHA 77306.9 and ALHA 77306.17) was examined. The pyrolysis products are very similar to those of the Murchison meteorite. The identified amino acids are present at quite low levels, they are racemic and are structurally similar to those observed in the Murchison meteorite. This indicates the possible chemical synthesis of these compounds in the meteorite parent body. The Allan Hills meteorite is not detectably contaminated.

    Notes: Summary Autonomic nervous system dysfunction is a common complication of severe intracranial disease. The aim of this study was to reveal the autonomic changes in patients suffering from acute intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH). 25 patients with spontaneous ICH within 24 hours of onset of symptoms were included. All patients were treated with standardised medical management and the meta- and normetanephrines were detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in 24-hour urine every day. The mean level of normetanephrine (709±579 μg/day) and metanephrine (244±161 mg/day) were significantly elevated in comparison with a control group, p⩽0,01. The norepinephrine elevation was of greater diagnostic and prognostic importance. Maximum urinary catecholamine metabolite levels occurred between day 3 to 10 after the bleeding. Normetanephrines correlated with the prognosis and the complications of ICH: intraventricular involvement resulted in significantly elevated normetanephrine levels (896±520 μg/day versus 311±78 μg/day) p⩽0,01. Patients with a great volume of haematoma developed severe autonomic dysregulation (normetanephrines 1114±493 μg/day), whereas patients with smaller haematoma did not (339±125 μg/day) p⩽0,0001; patients with bad outcome (1014±620 mg/day) had higher levels of normetanephrines than those with a good prognosis (322±110 μg/day) p⩽0,001. A close relationship to elevated intracranial pressure was established. This study demonstrated the feasibility of detecting autonomic nervous system dysfunction in neurological intensive care patients by means of examination of the metabolites of the catecholamines in the urine. The pattern of elevation in ICH and the relation to the clinical situation is presented. Norepinephrine offers the chance of simple and feasible monitoring of autonomic dysfunction.

    Notes: 1. The effects of isoprenaline, noradrenaline and fenoterol on the electrically evoked release of [3H]-acetylcholine from the rat phrenic nerve were investigated.2. Isoprenaline (0.1 μmol/L) and noradrenaline (1 μmol/L) enhanced evoked [3H]-acetylcholine release by about 90%, an effect which was abolished by CGP 20712A (0.1 μmol/L), a specific antagonist at β1-adrenoceptors. Noradrenaline still enhanced [3H]-acetylcholine release in the presence of phentolamine (1 μmol/L).3. The enhancing effect of both isoprenaline and noradrenaline decreased at prolonged exposure times (24–32 min). A pre-exposure of the tissue to a low concentration (0.01 μmol/L) of isoprenaline prevented the enhancing effect of 0.1 μmol/L isoprenaline.4. Fenoterol, a specific agonist at β2-adrenoceptors, did not modify evoked [3H]-acetylcholine release.5. The present results indicate the existence of facilitatory β1-adrenoceptors on the motor nerve. These receptors appear to be desensitized either by a high concentration of, or by a long exposure to, agonists. Under the present conditions noradrenaline enhances the release of newly synthesized transmitter mainly by stimulation of β-adrenoceptors.
