Notes: Summary We consider a degenerate parametric oscillator and show that, when the cavity is detuned both with respect to the pump and with respect to its subharmonic, the system can display bistable or self-pulsing behaviour. Bistability (self-pulsing) requires that the product of the two detuning parameters is positive (negative). In the self-pulsing regime, the system exhibits period doubling and chaos. We generalize our steady-state analysis to the case in which the cavity has a poor finesse for the pump mode.

Notes: We demonstrate a new experimental method which allows the measurement of the nonlinear optic index in absorptive media with great sensitivity. In this technique the reflection from a polarized Gaussian laser beam close to the Brewster angle is measured. A sensitivity enhancement factor of 30 with respect to other techniques is observed for an optical crystal, and higher values are possible to be obtained. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have observed low-threshold lasing in a GaAs single quantum-well vertical microcavity. At 4 K the quantum-well emission linewidth is reduced, and the coupling efficiency β of the spontaneous emission to the lasing mode is improved. The laser threshold pump power obtained for a 200 A(ring) GaAs quantum well pumped by a continuous wave Ti:sapphire laser was 5 mW, corresponding to 85 μW absorbed power. We have compared the experimental results with the theoretical prediction, and estimated the value of β to be 10−2.

Notes: Abstract We exploit the general formalism devised in Part I of this paper to analyze, from a quantum statistical viewpoint, the multimode instability in absorptive optical bistability. Below instability threshold, the incoherent part of the spectrum of transmitted light presents sidebands in correspondence with the cavity modes. On approaching threshold the sidebands, which correspond to the modes that are becoming unstable, exhibit line narrowing and thus herald the rise of the instability. Beyond threshold, the behaviour of the system is governed by an equation formally identical to the Risken laser equation.

Notes: Abstract We describe the dynamics of a laser with saturable absorber by a two-level model, which assumes a Gaussian radial profile for the electric field. Both the amplifier and the absorber are exactly resonant with the cavity mode frequency. We calculate all the stationary solutions of the system, including those detuned from the resonance frequency. We perform the linear stability analysis of the normal lasing state in the rate equation approximation. The instability range turns out to be somehow smaller in the Gaussian than in the plane wave case.
