Description / Table of Contents:
Free radicals are formed by dissociation of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic N-substituted N-Nitroso-acylamines as is already known from the N-Nitroso-N-aryl-acyl-amines. This will be shown in a large number of examples by polyreactions (homo, co-, and graft polymerization reactions) with various monomers such as methyl methacrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, n-butyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl pyrrolidone etc.The efficiency of some of the N-Nitroso-acylamines may be compared to that of well-known initiators, such as benzoyl peroxyde, or azo bis-isobutyronitrile. They open up new vistas in radical polymerization reactions, particularly in branching and crosslinking of polymer molecules. Experiments of polymerization of styrene with various N-Nitroso-acylamines prove the influence of chemical structure on the reactivity of the catalysts. Also in studies on styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate etc. we observed retardation and inhibition effects with other initiators of the investigated group. These are explained by resonance stabilization. During experiments of building up graft and block polymers with polystyrene as a skeleton, acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate as monomers, and N-Nitroso-N-benzyl-stearoylamide as the initiator, the infrared investigation showed, that the methyl methacrylate component of the high polymeric substance has a syndiotactic chain structure.
Notes:
