Notes: Abstract We report the MRI and CT findings of an intracranial meningeal melanocytoma (IMM) arising from Meckel's cave and review the imaging characteristics of IMM. On CT, IMM constantly appear as well-circumscribed, isodense to slightly dense, extra-axial tumours with homogeneous contrast enhancement. This appearance is nonspecific and similar to that of meningiomas or small neuromas. On MRI, the signal of IMM is strongly related to the amount of melanin pigment: the more melanin, the more shortening of T1 and T2 relaxation times. Only when it shows as a homogeneous mass, bright on T1 and dark on T2 weighting, can a specific diagnosis of a melanin-containing tumour be made. However, this still cannot provide a distinction between IMM and malignant meningeal melanoma.

Notes: Abstract: Addition of endothelins (ETs) to neuroblastomaglioma hybrid cells (NG108-15) induced increases in cytosolic free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) levels of labeled inositol monophosphates and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate [Ins(1,4,5)P3]. The increases in [Ca2+]i elicited by the three ETs (ET-1, ET-2, and ET-3) were transient and did not show a sustained phase. Chelating extracellular Ca2+ in the medium by adding excess EGTA decreased the ET-mediated Ca2+ response by 40-50%. This result indicates that a substantial portion of the increase in [Ca2+]i was due to influx from an extracellular source. However, the increase in [Ca2+]i was not affected by verapamil or nifedipine (10−5M). A rank order potency of ET-1 ET-2 ET-3 is shown for the stimulated increase in [Ca2+]i, as well as labeled inositol phosphates, in these cells. ATP (10−4M) and bradykinin (10−7M) also induced the increases in [Ca2+]i and Ins(1,4,5)P3 in NG108-15 cells, albeit to a different extent. When compared at 10−7M, bradykinin elicited a five- to sixfold higher increase in the level of Ins(1,4,5)P3, but less than a twofold higher increase in [Ca2+]i than those induced by ET-1. Additive increases in both Ins(1,4,5)P3 and [Ca2+]i were observed when ET-1, ATP, and bradykinin were added to the cells in different combinations, suggesting that each receptor agonist is responsible for the hydrolysis of a pool of polyphosphoinositide within the membrane. ET-1 exhibited homologous desensitization of the Ca2+ response, but partial heterologous desensitization to the Ca2+ response elicited by ATP. On the contrary, ET-1 did not desensitize the response elicited by bradykinin, although bradykinin exhibited complete heterologous desensitization to the response elicited by ET-1. Taken together, these results illustrate that, in NG108-15 cells, a considerable amount of receptor cross talk occurs between ET and other receptors that transmit signals through the polyphosphoinositide pathway.

Notes: The systematic variation of anomalous Pr antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN(Pr) for the two-CuO2-layer cuprate system MA2PrCu2Oy (M=Cu, Hg, Tl, Pb; A=Ba, Sr) was verified through the observation of a new Hg-1212 HgSr2PrCu2O6+δ tetragonal compound with a TN(Pr) of 6 K and a Pr—O bond length of 2.492 A(ring) between Pr and oxygen in the adjacent CuO2 layers. For the tetragonal/orthorhombic 1212 compounds including the PrBa2Cu3O7−y system, TN(Pr) was found to decrease monotonically with increasing Pr—O distance. The importance of Pr-O-Pr superexchange magnetic coupling is expected for all two-CuO2-layer MmA2PrCu2Oy m212-type (m=1, 2, 3) compounds. A similar Pr anomaly in the 2212-type system was first observed on the new tetragonal (Pb0.5Cu0.5)2(Ba0.5Sr0.5)2PrCu2O8 compound with a high TN(Pr) of 9 K. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High field (up to 5 T) magnetization measurements were performed on both bulk and field-aligned powder samples of RNi2B2C (R=Dy, Ho) magnetic superconductors. For Tc=3.8 K, a DyNi2B2C superconductor with antiferromagnetic Néel temperature TN of 10–11 K, and anomalous field-induced weak-ferromagnetic transitions were observed above the superconducting upper critical field Hc2(2 K) of 1.75 kG. The aligned powders show distinct hysteresis characteristics for both fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal basal plane. For Tc=7.8 K, HoNi2B2C has an incommensurate magnetic ordering temperature Tm of 6 K and TN of 5.2 K. Anomalous field-induced weak-ferromagnetic transitions were also observed below TN. No hysteresis can be detected for TN〈T〈Tm. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The tetragonal c-axis alignment of Tc=23 K Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO3.97 superconducting powder was achieved in a 1 T alignment field with rotating powder/epoxy holder perpendicular to the alignment field. The in-plane penetration depth λab for this electron-doped superconductor was derived using zero-field-cooled Meissner diamagnetic data with low applied field (Ba〈Hc1ab) parallel to the c-axis aligned powder. A small Pr paramagnetic contribution was subtracted. The temperature dependence of Δλab(T)=λab(T)−λab(0) [with λab(0)∼133 nm] up to ∼0.5 Tc can be fitted well with a non-s-wave or d-wave-like power law Δλab(T)=AT2+CT4, where the T2 law is dominated at low temperature. The present result agrees with recent phase-sensitive experiment, which indicates d-wave nature for these electron-doped 214 cuprates. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In organometallic vapor phase epitaxy, changes in growth conditions can be used to modulate the extent of CuPt ordering and, hence, the band gap energy of GaInP. One method is to add Te during growth. An increase in the band gap energy of 0.1 eV due to a decrease in ordering has been obtained by increasing the input pressure of diethyltelluride from 0 to 8×10−6 Torr, which corresponds to a doping concentration of 6×1017 cm−3. This simple procedure offers an attractive method to grow quantum wells (QWs) and superlattices, which are useful for band gap engineering, by modulating the input pressure of the Te precursor. Various heterostructures with abrupt interfaces were successfully grown with interruptions at the interfaces between the Te-doped and undoped GaInP layers. QWs as thin as 10 nm can be clearly seen from transmission electron microscope images. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Structural and magnetic properties of the new Bi-doped Gd2−xBixCuO4 system are reported. With the doping of larger trivalent Bi3+ ions, the T′ phase solubility region is retained in the range of 0≤x≤0.1. Weak ferromagnetic or canted antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN(Cu) of Cu moments decreases from 282 K for Gd2CuO4 to 258 K for Gd1.93Bi0.07CuO4 and 256 K for Gd1.9Bi0.1CuO4. Due to small internal field Hint associated with weak ferromagnetic order, the spin reorientation temperature Tsr(Cu) is field dependent and decreases from 24 K in 1 G to 12 K in 1 kG for Gd1.95Bi0.05CuO4. Preliminary powder x-ray Rietveld refinement analysis using the T′ phase ideal oxygen position indicates a large temperature factor B for the oxygen sites in the Cu–O plane and suggests that the degree of oxygen structural distortion may be closely related to the strength of weak ferromagnetic order. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High doping efficiencies have been observed in phosphorus-implanted CuInS2 single crystals by pulsed electron-beam annealing, which could not be achieved by the conventional furnace annealing method. This paper presents the investigations by using the electron paramagnetic resonance measurement on this p-type doping effect. The electron paramagnetic resonance signal from the phosphorus interstitials was observed in the as-implanted crystals. The same signal appeared in the subsequently thermally annealed samples but disappeared in the pulsed electron beam annealed ones. This shows the superiority of melting crystal surfaces in the pulsed electron-beam annealing on eliminating the implantation-induced defects to obtain high doping efficiencies.
