    Notes: The role of energetic electrons in periodic self-oscillations of a discharge plasma has been studied by measuring the spatiotemporal evolution of plasma potential, electron density, and electron velocity distribution function. It is found that the self-oscillation involves the instabilities of sheaths, propagation of a double layer and competition between the ionization, thermalization, and diffusion. The energetic electrons are the key factor which links these processes to form the oscillation cycle. The time interval of each phase in the cycle is estimated according to the physical process and the calculations are in agreement with experimental measurements. The study of the probe perturbation effect on the oscillations indicates that the length of the oscillation period is related to the amount of energetic electrons; the more energetic electrons, the shorter the period. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A ring-beam distribution function of moderately relativistic electrons is unstable to electromagnetic and electrostatic waves. The results obtained in numerical simulations show that electromagnetic radiation corresponding to the normal modes of the background plasma is observed to grow even in the presence of a strong electrostatic instability and becomes very strong when the growth of the electrostatic Langmuir waves is minimized, and that the instability process is best described as a beam cyclotron resonance. Another strong radiation generated by the ring beam is the Z mode which is coupled to the electrostatic Langmuir wave. Under certain circumstances, these mechanisms may be significant in astrophysical situations.

    Notes: A Monte Carlo method is used to simulate a turbulent electrostatic field that could process any given space correlation functions or corresponding power spectra. Then the diffusions of charged particles could be obtained by integrating the particle motion equations in this electric field. The simulation relative diffusion (without a magnetic field) shows good agreement with the analytic predictions on the extent of both quality and semiquantity. The simulation results in a strong magnetic field also agree qualitatively with both analytic theories and simulation results based on drift motion equation except for the parameter scaling law of diffusion coefficients. But the transverse relative diffusions in weak and middle magnetic fields are quite different from the analytic results. Two analytic discussions are provided for explaining these discrepancies.

    Notes: The feasibility of growing device-quality cubic GaN/GaAs(001) films by metal organic chemical vapor deposition has been demonstrated. The optical quality of the GaN films was characterized by room-temperature photoluminescence measurements, which shows a full width at half maximum of 46 meV. The structural quality of the films was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. There are submicron-size grains free from threading dislocations and stacking faults. More importantly, a cubic-phase GaN blue light-emitting diode has been fabricated. The device process, which is very simple and compatible with current GaAs technology, indicates a promising future for the blue light-emitting diode. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We use only nitrogen as the reaction gas to deposit on the cleaned Si wafer an extra-thin Si nitride film (∼40 A(ring)) by electron cyclotron resonance method. Electroluminescence (EL) with its peak wavelength at about 7000 A(ring) from the semitransparent Au/extra-thin Si nitride film/p-Si structure has been detected. The effects of forward bias and annealing on the EL have been studied. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have determined the far-field patterns and beam parameters of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with different structures. The results show that the window diameter and the active-layer aperture of VCSELs strongly influence laser far-field distributions and beam characteristics; for VCSELs with small window ω=5 μm, only one dominant lobe has been observed in the far-field profiles, even though injected current was increased up to 2 Ith; and the smaller the ratio of the window diameter to the active-layer aperture, the larger is the far-field divergence. The laser structure dependence of the K factor has also been studied. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Acid extracts of rat tail tendon were subjected to reverse dialysis against 0.5% PEG at 4°C in an attempt to induce liquid crystallization. After 48 h, gel and fibril formation were initiated by continuing dialysis at 20°C against the same PEG solution adjusted to pH 7.4. The inclusion of calcium- or magnesium chloride (final concentration 0.3-33 mM) in the collagen solution before dialysis resulted in strongly birefringent gels that showed a progressive rotation of the slow axis of birefringence with increasing distance from the lateral margin of the gel. The gels contained fibers running predominantly in the plane of the flattened gel and crossing at angles of between 55° and 90°. We suggest that liquid crystallization is responsible for this phenomenon and that it might be possible to exploit this to produce materials for tissue engineering. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
