Notes: Summary The sequence of the 3′ 1184 nucleotides of tobacco vein-banding mosaic virus (TVBMV) genome has been determined. It contains a single open reading frame which encompasses the whole of the coat protein of TVBMV. The sequence of the first 20 amino acids at the N-terminal region of the coat protein has also been determined chemically to be GDDQTVDAGKNVQSNQKQRN. The sequence matches the translation product of the open reading frame starting with amino acid-271; a glycine residue. Thus the coat protein of TVBMV has a calculated Mr of 30 210. The 3′ non-coding region of TVBMV is 185 nucleotides in length. Sequence alignment of the coat proteins or the 3′ non-coding regions from TVBMV and other reported potyviruses indicated that TVBMV is a separate species of the potyvirus genus.

Notes: Summary An attempt is made at giving an appraisal of some representative rheological models of both differential and integral type, using the standard rheological measurements of six polymer melts. Experimental data obtained were the steady shear viscosity and the first normal stress difference by means of aWeissenberg rheogoniometer over the range of shear rates: 10−2 ~ 10 sec−1, and by means of aHan slit/capillary rheometer over the range of shear rates: 10 ~ 103 sec−1. Also measured by means of theWeissenberg rheogoniometer were the dynamic viscosity and dynamic elastic modulus over the range of frequencies: 0.3 × 10−2 ~ 3 × 102 sec−1. Rheological models chosen for an appraisal are theSpriggs 4-constant model, theMeister model, and theBogue model. It is found that the capability of the three models considered is about the same in their prediction of the rheological behavior of polymer melts in simple shearing flow. It is pointed out however that, due to the ensuing mathematical complexities, the usefulness of these models is limited to the study of flow problems associated with simple flow situations. Therefore, in analysing the complex flow situations often encountered with various polymer processings, the authors suggest use of the empirical models of the power-law type for both the viscosity and normal stress functions.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract The distribution of components in the HG-1 ammonia catalyst promoted by rare earth oxide (successfully developed by the authors) was analyzed by electron microprobe photography. The results enable us to explain the effect of additives upon the activity as well as the remarkably high lifetime of catalyst.

Notes: Measurements were taken of the viscoelastic properties of six polymer melts by mean of the Weissenberg rheogoniometer and the Han slit/capillary rheometer. Polymers in vestigated were three high-density polyethylenes of different polydispersity, a low-density polyethylene, a polypropylene, and a polystyrene. The range of shear rates tested was from about 5.0 × 10-3 to 10 sec-1 with the Weissenberg rheogoniometer, from about 10 to 102 sec-1 with the slit rheometer, and from about 102 and 103 with the capillary rheometer: the temperature of measurement was 200°C. The three different apparatuses give consistent results over almost six decades of shear rates, yielding satisfactory correlations of shear viscosity to shear rate and of normal stress difference to shear rate.
