Notes: To investigate the effect of oxygen pressure on the synthesis of LiNiO2 cathode materialfor Li secondary battery, powder was prepared by emulsion method and calcined at 750°C for 24 hunder various oxygen gas pressures. LiNiO2 single phase could be synthesized under oxygenpressure of 101.3~103.3 kPa but not under air atmosphere. Cation mixing in Li site of LiNiO2lowered as oxygen pressure increased and was saturated around 103.3 kPa. The lowest cationmixing, 7.0% of Ni3+ in the Li site was obtained at 750°C for 24 h under 103.3 kPa of oxygenpressure

Notes: The polarized reflectance spectrum of the perylene–TCNQ complex has been measured at high pressure up to 27 kbar using a diamond anvil cell incorporated into a microspectrophotometer. The degree of charge transfer (ρ), the transfer integral (t), and the site-energy difference (Δ) are estimated at each pressure from analysis of the charge-transfer band. The pressure dependences of t and Δ are found to be ∂ ln t/∂P=+2.3% kbar−1 and ∂Δ/∂P=−6.4 MeV kbar−1, respectively. It is shown that the observed pressure dependence of the stabilization energy of the charge-transfer excited state is mainly attributable to the change in the electrostatic energy accompanying the lattice contraction.

Notes: The asymmetric diffraction peak profiles and peak shift of conventional powder diffractometry systems caused by the angular divergence along the vertical axis are reproduced by asymmetrized peak profile functions. The asymmetrization is achieved by convoluting the angular dispersions of both incident and scattered beams along the vertical axis. A general method for mapping vertical window functions to the horizontal direction is proposed, and the formulas of two types of horizontal window functions mapped from symmetric double vertical Bartlett (triangular) and Gaussian window functions are presented. Both formulas incorporate a single asymmetry parameter connected with the open width of the Soller slits along the vertical direction. When experimental diffraction peak profiles are fitted by asymmetrized pseudo-Voigt functions, the asymmetry parameter gives good coincidence with the Soller slit angle, which is clearly specified in a given diffractometer. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An efficient method for evaluating asymmetric diffraction peak profile functions based on the convolution of the Lorentzian or Gaussian function with any asymmetric window function is proposed. When this method is applied to approximate the convolution with the Howard's window function [J. Appl. Crystallogr. 15, 615 (1982)], only a few terms of numerical integration give satisfactory results, even if the asymmetry is very strong. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A 31-year-old man visited our hospital in May 1991, com-plaining of an abdominal serpiginous eruption with pruritus (Fig. 1). He had eaten raw “firefly squid” (Watasenia scintil-lans) 2 weeks before the onset of the disease, and the erup-tion had grown to about 30 cm in length in 2 weeks. The laboratory findings included a leukocyte count of 6100/mm3 with 10% eosinophils and a serum IgE level of 134 U/mL (normal 〈 303 U/mL). The front of the eruption was excised. Seven parasitic sections were observed in the dermis (Fig. 2). The diameter of the sections were about 0.08 mm. The mus-cle layer was of the polymyarian coelomyarian type. In the body cavity of the parasite, there was a glandular part of the esophagus composed of vacuolated cells with many nuclei and a narrow esophageal lumen. Well-developed lateral nerve chords were also visible in these sections. Two of the parasitic sections showed intestine composed of cuboidal cells with a round lumen and lateral nerve chords of both sides touching each other in the center of body cavity. These findings indicate the characteristics of larval Spiruroidea. The morphologic appearance of the sectioned worm closely resembled the type × larva of the superfamily Spiruroidea of Hasegawa.1

Notes: Abstract Chronic renal failure due to granulomatous interstitial nephritis in sarcoidosis is a rare phenomenon, and its response to corticosteroid therapy is not well known. We report a patient with sarcoidosis who presented with chronic renal failure and hypercalcemia, but who did not exhibit nephrocalcinosis. Renal histology findings showed the presence of noncaseating granuloma and heavy interstitial nephritis. Although hypercalcemia was remarkably improved by corticosteroid therapy, chronic renal failure, due to interstitial fibrosis and scarring, remained unchanged. This case reinforces evidence supporting the effectiveness of corticosteroid therapy in granulomatous interstitial nephritis of sarcoidosis, and suggests the need for early initiation of the therapy to avoid permanent renal dysfunction.

Notes: The crystal structure of 2,2-dihydroxymethylbutanoic acid (C6H12O4) in monoclinic form has been determined ab initio from synchrotron radiation powder diffraction data. Two O and five C atoms were first derived by direct methods. Two missing O atoms and one C atom were found by the Monte Carlo method without applying constraint to their relative positions. Positional and isotropic displacement parameters of these non-H atoms were refined by the Rietveld method. Molecules are linked by hydrogen bonds and they make sheet-like networks running parallel to the (010) plane. The Monte Carlo method is demonstrated to be a powerful tool for finding missing atoms in partially solved structure.

Notes: Summary A 17-year-old Japanese girl had right hemihypertrophy, vascular nevus of the right side of the body, right hemimegalencephaly, multiple haemangiomatosis, varicosis and chronic proliferative glomerulonephritis. The hypertrophied side of the cerebrum showed no malformations. Quantitative studies showed no significant differences between the two cerebral hemispheres in size, form, density or DNA content of nerve and glial cells. The hemimegalencephaly seemed to be due to an increase in the absolute number of nerve and glial cells in the ipsilateral cerebral hemisphere. Eight cases of hemihypertrophy with hemimegal-encephaly have been reported to date, in all of them hemihypertrophy and hemimegalencephaly were on the same side. This condition seems to be due to unilateral overproduction of neuroblasts and glioblasts or hindrance of the normal loss of excess neurons, which may be induced by hemihypertrophy of the mesenchyme surrounding the CNS.

Notes: A quantitative basis for rocking curve measurements of preferentially oriented polycrystalline thin films is presented. The Gaussian function is used for modeling the preferred orientation of crystallites around the plane normal of the specimen surface. A theoretical rocking curve is fitted to the observed curve by the least-squares method, and the degree of preferred orientation, given in volume fraction, can be derived from a refined preferred orientation parameter of the distribution function even when the preferred orientation is very small. Uses of diffractometers equipped with parallel-beam optics and the integrated intensity rather than peak intensity are important for reliable rocking curve measurement
