Notes: [Auszug] Ivinson replies—I am grateful for Jon Cohen's clarification. It is indeed an important issue and as such clarity is important. Cohen agrees that a consensus was reached but disagrees with respect to what that consensus applied to. Ruth Macklin has told Nature Medicine that despite the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Following an intense two-day session at the World Health Organization's Geneva headquarters on June 25–26th, an ad hoc group convened by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) reached an eleventh hour consensus on guidelines covering ethical considerations in anti-HIV vaccine ...

Notes: [Auszug] The field of gene therapy has matured to the extent that countless therapeutic protocols are being advanced through animal testing into first phase clinical trials and beyond1. A realisation that no single approach will suffice but rather each disease will necessitate the design of a unique ...

Notes: [Auszug] AIDS was first reported 20 years ago last month in the United States Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Since the start of the epidemic, the disease has cost the lives of nearly 22 million adults and children—12-year-old South African AIDS activist Nkosi Johnson being just one of ...

Notes: [Auszug] WHEN startled, most people jump, a reflex which is presumably a primitive defence mechanism. It is, perhaps, surprising then that people in whom this reaction is exaggerated (as in patients with startle disease, otherwise known as hyperexplexia) are probably more at risk than those lacking the ...

Notes: [Auszug] HUNTINGTON'S disease is a disorder to be reckoned with. The causative gene managed to remain hidden for a full ten years of intensive international gene searching after linkage was established, and now the fear that finding it might have been the easy bit seems to be being borne out. As Francis ...

Notes: Abstract Coeliac disease is strongly associated with HLA-DQ2, but it is possible that additional major histocompatibility complex genes also confer disease susceptibility. Encoded close to HLA-DQ are two genes, TAP1 and TAP2, whose products are believed to transport antigenic peptides from the cytoplasm into the endoplasmic reticulum. Comparison of 81 coeliac disease patients with caucasoid controls revealed an increased frequency of the alleles TAP1A and TAP2A in the patient population. However, no significant difference was found when patients were compared with HLA-DR and -DQ matched controls, indicating linkage disequilibrium between TAP1A, TAP2A, and HLA-DQ2. The TAP gene products do not have a major influence on susceptibility or resistance to coeliac disease in a Northern European Caucasoid population.
