Notes: The effects of long-term β-adrenoceptor stimulation or inhibition on parotid and submandibular glands, saliva secretion, and caries development were studied. Groups of rats were treated daily with: 0.5 or 5 mg/kg body weight of isoproterenol (IPR), 0.5 or 5 mg/kg bw propranolol (PRO), or saline. After 42 days, saliva was collected and analyzed for secretion rate, total protein, amylase, sialic acid and electrolytes. Total protein and amylase in saliva decreased and potassium increased in the high IPR group. Phosphate increased in both IPR groups and decreased in the high PRO group. The average weight of parotid glands increased 3.7 times in the high IPR group and 1.8 times in the low IPR group. Amylase and total protein in parotid gland extracts decreased in both IPR groups. The submandibular gland weight increased 1.5 times in the high IPR group. Total protein decreased in the high IPR group. There was no difference in caries development.

Notes: Abstract Using time-resolved laser spectroscopy we have determined the hyperfine structure in the 3s 2 n p 2 P 3/2 sequence of27Al (I=5/2). The magnetic-dipole interaction constants were found to scale withn *−2.85 (n * is the effective principal quantum number) in the investigated regionn=6–12. Significant quadrupole interaction constants were obtained forn=6–9. The measured radiative lifetimes forn=6–12 scale withn *2 .

Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation of the isotopic composition of cosmic-ray nitrogen and oxygen is reported. The detector is a stack of nuclear emulsions exposed at about 3 g cm−2 atmospheric depth. The mass determinations are based on photometric track width measurements on stopping nuclei. The standard deviation of the mass measurements is 0.46 AMU for nitrogen and 0.50 AMU for oxygen. The energy of the measured nuclei falls in the interval 220–450 MeV nucleon−1 at the top of the atmosphere. The measured isotopic quotients have been extrapolated to near interstellar space with standard methods. The extrapolated quotients are15N/N=0.34±0.10,17O/O=0.02±0.03,18O/O=0.07±0.03. The nitrogen quotient extrapolated to the cosmic-ray source shows that the nitrogenoxygen abundance ratio is approximately the same in the source as in the solar system. The result has been compared with different hypotheses about the source composition and is found to be in best agreement with a hypothesis which states that source matter has approximately the composition of the solar system and that a selection mechanism, which depends on the atomic properties of the elements, is working in the source.

Notes: Abstract Mass measurements have been performed on stopping cosmic ray carbon nuclei in a nuclear emulsion stack, which was exposed to the primary radiation in a high altitude balloon flight. The mass determinations are based on measurements of mean track width and residual range in the range intervals 0〈R〈0.75 mm and 1〈R〈12 mm. The mean track width measurements have been performed with nuclear track photometers of special construction. The mass measurements in the interval 0〈R〈0.75 mm have given a nearly symmetrical mass distribution. The width of the distribution is equal to that expected for a distribution which contains only one isotope. The result indicates that one of the stable isotopes is appreciably more abundant than the other. The measurements in the range interval 1〈R〈12 mm gave the isotopic ratio13C/12C+13C)=0.08. The ratio has been extrapolated to the cosmic ray source. It is found to be smaller in the source than at the point of measurement. Different assumptions about the origin of the cosmic radiation are discussed with regard to the results obtained in this investigation.

Notes: Abstract High-resolution laser-spectroscopy measurements of hyperfine structure and isotope shifts were performed for the 6snd 1 D 2 sequence of Ba-I in the regionn=12–24. Stepwise laser excitations of a collimated atomic beam were used. A strong influence on the hyperfine structure is observed at the perturbation atn=14, caused by interaction with the 5d7d configuration. Whereas the isotope shift for the even isotopes stays essentially constant with increasingn, the odd isotopes exhibit a strong change, indicating hyperfine-induced shifts.

Notes: Abstract We have measured radiative lifetimes in the 5s n p 1 P 1 (n=5–29) and 5s n f 1 F 3 (n=4–11) Rydberg series in neutral strontium. The measurements were performed with single-step laser excitation starting from the ground state or from a metastable state populated by collisions. The decay photons were detected using delayed coincidence technique or a transient recorder. The presence of configuration interaction in the 5s n p 1 P 1 series can be observed aroundn=8. The perturbation in the 5s n f 1 F 3 series is not reflected in the behaviour of the lifetime values.

Notes: Abstract A study is made of the isotopic composition of primary cosmic ray boron and carbon in the energy interval 135–390 MeV/n. The quotients11B/(10B +11B) = 0.61 ±0.12 and13C/(12C +13C) = 0.06 ±0.04, valid at the top of the atmosphere, are obtained from photometric measurements on tracks found in an Ilford G5 emulsion stack exposed to the radiation.

Notes: Abstract High multiplicity12C induced reactions in Ag(Br) at energies between 55A MeV and 110A MeV have been selected and investigated event by event in nuclear emulsions. Only a fraction of these events can possibly be described in terms of a normal thermal spectator-participant mechanism. Several events exhibit a violent breakup into several light and medium-mass fragments. A strong suppression of projectile associated proton- and composite particle emission in the forward direction is found in comparison with inclusive spectra. A large part of the low energy protons originates from a very slow source, with a velocity comparable to that of the heaviest fragment. The parallel fraction of the c.m. energy in each event, which is governed by the more energetic protons, has a broad distribution with a mean value of 0.61 and thus shows no signals of collective production mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract Natural radiative lifetimes have been measured for the 3s 2 ns 2 S 1/2 (n≦10) and 3s 2 nd 2 D 5/2,3/2 (n≦11) sequences of aluminum using pulsed laser excitation of an atomic beam. The investigated states were populated from the ground configuration using UV pulses of wavelength down to 210 nm produced by a Nd: YAG- or an excimer-pumped dye-laser system. TheS-state lifetimes increase regularily with increasing principal quantum number but this is not the case for theD sequence.
