    Notes: Eddy current induced in a metal by a coil carrying an alternating current may be perturbed by the presence of any macroscopic defects in the material, such as cracks, surface indentations, or inclusions. In eddy-current nondestructive evaluation, defects are commonly sensed by a change of the coil impedance resulting from perturbations in the electromagnetic field. This paper describes theoretical predictions of eddy-current probe responses for surface cracks with finite opening. The theory expresses the electromagnetic field scattered by a three-dimensional flaw as a volume integral with a dyadic kernel. Probe signals are found by first solving an integral equation for the field at the flaw. The field equation is approximated by a discrete form using the moment method and a numerical solution found using conjugate gradients. The change in probe impedance due to a flaw is calculated from the flaw field. Predictions of the theory are compared with experimental impedances due to eddy-current interaction with a rectangular surface breaking slot. Good agreement is found between predictions and the measurements.

    Notes: To examine the possible use of height velocity (HV) as a growth screening tool, annual HV data calculated from height measurements made by school nurses were compared with those based on an auxologist's measurements in 20 short school children. The subjects were 12 primary school children (seven girls, five boys) with a mean (± SD) age of 5·9(0·6) years and eight secondary school children (six girls, two boys) with a mean (± SD) age of 11·8 (0·4) years. Heights were measured by the school nurses, separated by an interval of 1 year. Mean HV of the primary school children when assessed by school nurses was 5·92 cm/year compared with 5·97 cm/year when assessed by the auxologist. Mean (± SD) HV standard deviation score (HVSDS) was 0·03 (0·97) and 0·10 (1·15) respectively. Mean HV of the secondary school children when assessed by school nurses was 6·04 cm/year compared with 5·63 cm/year when assessed by the auxologist. Mean (± SD) HVSDS was −0·8 (2·1) and −1·21 (1·54) respectively. Of eight children (three primary, five secondary) identified by the auxologist as having HV 〈 25th centile of Tanner and Whitehouse standards only four were identified by school nurses (one primary, three secondary). One child identified by school nurses to have HV 〈 25th centile was found by the auxologist to be above the 25th centile. We conclude that HV assessment may fail to identify significant pathology in the community and that accurate height measurement rather than HV should be the principal referral criterion.

    Notes: Summary To establish the reliability of school nurses given training in height measurement we conducted an intra- and inter-individual reliability study under field conditions. The measurements of 7 school nurses were compared with those of a trained auxologist. The pooled standard deviation of the differences between repeat measurements for the school nurses (0·32 cm) compared favourably with that of the auxologist (0·35 cm). Height measurements made by school nurses were accurate within the range of -0·53 cm to +0·64 cm when compared with the auxologist. We conclude that a single, accurate height measurement made by a school nurse would be sufficiently reliable for use in routine screening for short stature.

    Notes: Over the past three years, the total TMX-U diagnostic data base has grown to exceed 10 Mbytes from over 1300 channels; roughly triple the originally designed size. This acquisition and processing load has resulted in an experiment repetition rate exceeding 10 min per shot using the five original Hewlett–Packard HP-1000 computers with their shared disks. Our new diagnostics tend to be multichannel instruments, which, in our environment, can be more easily managed using local computers. For this purpose, we are using HP series 9000 computers for instrument control, data acquisition, and analysis. Fourteen such systems are operational with processed format output exchanged via a shared resource manager. We are presently implementing the necessary hardware and software changes to create a local area network allowing us to combine the data from these systems with our main data archive. The expansion of our diagnostic system using the parallel acquisition and processing concept allows us to increase our data base with a minimum of impact on the experimental repetition rate.

    Notes: We discuss the results of large-scale density functional calculations for (7×7) benzene adsorption on the ferromagnetic substrate Ni{111}. Adsorption at the bridge site, with C–C bonds parallel to the [2¯11] direction, is found to be energetically preferred over the [1¯10]-oriented hcp site suggested by electron diffraction experiments. We discuss the roles of intermolecular forces and anisotropic molecular vibrations in accounting for this apparent discrepancy. Furthermore, our analysis of charge and spin densities clarifies the relationship between preferred adsorption sites and the symmetry of frontier molecular orbitals. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A c(2×4) LEED pattern is observed for methylidyne (CH) chemisorbed on Pt{110}(1×2) at a saturation coverage of 0.25 ML. Density functional calculations reveal that methylidyne is preferentially adsorbed in the fcc three-fold hollow site on the {111} microfacet of the reconstructed surface. A structure for the ordered overlayer is thus proposed, and both through-metal and through-space interactions are considered as possible causes for this unexpected long-range coherence. We argue that entropic effects may be implicated. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
