Notes: The perfection of the crystalline structure of PETP fibres was evaluated by means of two different X-ray methods. The values of the perfection index of the crystalline structure obtained with the method proposed by Ruland were correlated with the parameters characterizing the fold surface layers of the crystallites, particularly with the free energy of these layers. On the basis of the found correlation, the conclusion was drawn that the value of the perfection index depends on the order of the macromolecules within the fold surface layers of the crystallites.

Description / Table of Contents: Poly(ethylenterephthalat)-Fasern mit unterschiedlichem Reckverhältnis wurden untersucht.
Notes: Poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibres of different drawing ratio were investigated. The parameters of cold crystallization were determined from the DSC thermograms. The parameters of the supermolecular structure of the samples were determined by X-ray technique. On the base of the suitable linear regression relations it was stated that cold crystallization occurs within the fold surface layers of the crystallites. The effects of cold crystallization are changes of the molecular order within the surface layers. Direction and magnitude of these changes decide the initial melting temperature of the sample.

Notes: The rectilinear relationship between the integral intensity Bi and fiber density d is used as the basis of a new method for evaluation of the crystallinity index of polyamide fibers (PA-6). To calculate the value of the crystallinity index of the fibers one should have the integral intensity value of the sample and the integral intensities of crystalline and amorphous samples determined under defined instrumental conditions. The method provides a quick and simple means for determining the crystallinity. The method of half-integral intensity may be used only with care when the α-monoclinic polymorphic form dominates in the PA-6 fiber.

Notes: The index τ determined from the thermogram was correlated with the selected parameters of the amorphous material structure of polycaprolactam fibers. The investigated structural parameters were as follows: (a) the orientation factor determined by infrared absorption spectroscopy, based on the absorption band at 1130 cm-1; (b) the fraction of taut tie molecules calculated on the basis of the determined axial elastic modulus and volume crystallinity of the fiber. The occurrence of straight-line relations between the values of the index τ and the values of the investigated structural parameters was found out. The conclusion was formulated that the specificity of the investigated element of the DSC curve reflects the entropy transition rate. That transition, stimulated by fiber heating during the DSC experiment, consists of the increase of the disorder of taut tie molecules. Probably, the rate of that transition changes relatively to the magnitude of the stress affecting taut tie molecules.

Notes: The effect of varying the molecular weight of butyrylchitin membranes cast from methylene chloride on their properties has been investigated. Characterization analyses include X-ray, scanning calorimetry and tensile stress-strain. The crystal structure of the butyrylchitin was shown to consist of fringed micelles, irrespective of the molecular weights examined, and of lower crystal volume fraction than usually found for chitin membranes, 0.3 versus 0.5, respectively. The membranes exhibit greater ductility and less swelling in physiological salt solution with increasing molecular weight. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A hypothesis concerning the appearance of the endothermic peak of PETP fibre thermogram in the range above glass temperature but below melting temperature is presented. According to this hypothesis, the mobile peak reflects melting of ordered small regions located in the fold surfaces layers of crystalline blocks. These ordered regions result from cold cystallization during the DSC measurement in irregular adjacent reentry folds.

Notes: Two parameters, which characterize the two elements of the DSC curve in the temperature range 30 to 85°C, were correlated with structural parameters of the amorphous material. From the results it was concluded that the first element of the DSC image reflects the transition consisting in the change of the orientation of taut tie molecules. The second element, an endothermic peak, reflects the breaking of the bonds in the amorphous material located between the substructural units of the fibrils.
