Amyloid scheint sich in Astrocytenfortsätzen und Gliazellkörpern sowie in geschrumpften Nervenzellen zu bilden. Selten ist es in degenerierten Achsenzylindern vorhanden. Die Einzelfibrillen, welche die Amyloidablagerungen aufbauen, scheinen spiralige Form zu haben. Die großen im Lichtmikroskop sichtbaren Ablagerungen sind gewöhnlich auffallend symmetrisch im Gehirn lokalisiert.
    Notes: Summary Both well formed amyloid bodies showing clear concentric lamination and smaller masses of amyloid material have been found in the brains of rats suffering from scrapie. Amyloid appears to form within astrocyte processes and glial cell bodies, as well as shrunken nerve cells. Rarely, it was present in degenerate axis cylinders. The individual fibrils which make up amyloid deposits appeared to have a spiral constitution, and deposits large enough to be seen in the light microscope were commonly strikingly symmetrically located.

    Notes: Abstract— Following intracerebral inoculation of mouse adapted scrapie agent into mice, polyamine concentration in the brain decreases to about 75 per cent of the normal level during the first 2 months after intracerebral inoculation of the agent. Between 2 and 4 months after infection thelevel of spermidine and spermineincreased by 80 and 40 percent respectively to reach concentrations of 25 and 20 per cent higher than controls of the same age. During the same period the rate of incorporation of [14C]putrescine into spermidine is increased four-fold as compared with controls. The changes in polyamine levels correlate well with the pattern of astrocyte hypertrophy and are similar to those reported for human brain tumours. The concentration of polyamines in spleen increases soon after inoculation. Whilst changes in brain polyamines might be referred to the hypertrophic growth of astrocytes those in spleen are perhaps due to an increased metabolic activity of spleen cells associated with the replication of the agent. These results are derived from experimental mouse scrapie and not naturally occurring disease in sheep.

    Notes: Summary Neonatal thymectomy in CBA and Webster-Swiss mice resulted in posterior paralysis in 21% of the former and 11.4% of the latter. Foci of necrosis were found in the nervous system and localized regions of degeneration in the white matter of the cord. Liver necrosis was a common concomitant. From neither liver nor nervous system has disease been passaged into suckling mice. The lesions are probably due to a virus whose symbiotic relationship with the animal's tissues has been disturbed by thymectomy.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine einfache Modifikation des Erythrocytenungesättigte Fettsäure-Tests (SE-UFA) für Multiple Sklerose beschrieben. Hierbei werden sorgfältig gewaschene Erythrocyten (RBC) während 21 Tagen bei 4°C in Hanks-Medium belassen. Der Unterschied in der elektrophoretischen Mobilität gegenüber Kontrollerythrocyten steigt auf etwa 20% an. Es wird darauf hingewiesen, daß Vorsicht bei der Interpretation des E-UFA-Tests am Platze ist.
    Notes: Summary A simple modification of the Erythrocyte-Unsaturated Fatty Acid (E-UFA) Test for Multiple Sclerosis is described, whereby well washed erythrocytes (RBC) are allowed to stand in Hanks medium 199, for about 21 days at 4°C. The control-experimental difference in electrophoretic mobility of RBC rises to nearly 20%. Precautions in interpretation and wider implications of the SE-UFA test, recently uncovered, are briefly indicated.

Vergrößerte Mikrogliazellen zeigen eine Art bizarrer intracytoplasmatischer Einschlüsse. Einige zeigen die Form einer Lyra, andere sind stabförmig und in der Weise gepackt, daß sie eine Verzweigung vortäuschen, während andere wieder rechteckig erscheinen. Diese werden von einer großen Zahl dicht gepackter paralleler Lanmellen von rund 60 Å Dicke gebildet, die durch Zwischenräume von rund 120 Å getrennt sind. Anhäufungen von dicht gepackten Tubuli treten innerhalb der größeren bemarkten Nervenfasern auf, welche die Körnerschicht des Kleinhirns durchziehen.
    Notes: Summary Microglial activation accompanies astroglial proliferation in rat scrapie. Enlarged microglial cells show a variety of bizarre inclusions within their cytoplasm, some taking the form of a lyre, others being rod like and packed so as to simulate branching; others again are quadrilateral. These are made up of large numbers of clearly packed parallel lamellae about 60 Å wide separated by intervals of about 120 Å. Accumulations of closely packed tubules occur within the larger myelinated nerve fibres which traverse the granular layer of the cerebellum.
