Abstract Water-soluble Co and Fe phthalocyanines catalyze autooxidation of ascorbic acid and hydroquinone. Co and Fe phthalocyanines with cationic substituents in macroligands and also sulfo- and carboxy-substituted phthalocyanines were found to be the most active. Using the specific radical traps, the formation of active oxygen species (O2 −., OH−) in the course of the dark reaction of autooxidation was established.
