Notes: Summary A series of 148 diabetic patients were studied for the presence of soluble immune complexes using five different screening techniques. The percentage of positive results was 26% with direct nephelometry and PEG-C4, 27% with PEG-IgG, 33% with radiolabelled Clq binding and 57% with a specific technique for detection of insulin-anti-insulin immune complexes. The percentages of positivity in a group of 40 healthy donors were 2.5% for direct nephelometry and radiolabelled Clq binding, 5% for the PEG-C4 technique, and 10% for the PEG-IgG technique. Sixteen percent of the patients studied had positive results in three or more of the screening tests. When the results of the different screening tests in all patients and controls were compared among themselves, we found correlation coefficients between-0.01 (p = 0.854) when the direct nephelometry and the PEG-C4 tests were compared and 0.29 (p 〈 0.0003) when the direct nephelometry and PEG-IgG tests were compared. When the results of each test for the whole group of patients and the group of normal healthy donors were compared, significant differences were found for direct nephelometry (p = 0.004), PEG-IgG, PEG-C4, and insulin-anti-insulin immune complexes (p 〈 0.0001), as well as for anti-insulin antibodies (p 〈 0.001); no significant difference was observed when the results of radiolabelled Clq binding in diabetics and controls were compared (p = 0.2). Significant correlations were found between the results of several screening tests for soluble immune complexes, insulin dosage, and clinical or biochemical expressions of microangiopathy, nephropathy, or vasculopathy. These correlations were more consistent when we divided the patients into normal or abnormal groups for proteinuria, microangiopathy, and diabetic complications and considered the number of positive tests in each patient rather than the results of individual tests.

Notes: Abstract Colonisation assessments confirmed that Trichoderma harzianum biotypes Th1, Th2a, Th2b and Th3 inoculated into two distinct compost types at spawning became established by first flush assessment; the extension rate of two Th2 isolates was over 1000 times that of Th1 and Th3. Results subsequently confirmed that while Th1 and Th3 did not significantly affect yield, Th2 could reduce mushroom quality and productivity by as much as 80%. Analysis of compost type also indicated that the speed and magnitude of T. harzianum colonisation was influenced by key compost characteristics, most notably, moisture, ash content and degree of fermentation. This study has shown that compost parameters which have a positive influence on Agaricus growth and productivity also resulted in increased compost colonisation by T. harzianum. Commercially acceptable yields obtained from uninoculated compost confirmed that production of a high quality, productive substrate does not confer inherent immunity to colonisation by T. harzianum.

Notes: Abstract Interpretations of space-based measurements of atmospheric parameters in the mesosphere and thermosphere are complicated by large local-time variations at these altitudes. For this reason, satellite orbits are often preferred which precess through all local times one or more times per season. However, the local-time structure of the atmosphere is inherently non-stationary, which can lead to sampling and aliasing difficulties when attempting to deconvolve the measurements into zonal mean and tidal components. In the present study, hourly radar measurements of mesopause-region winds are used to form a mock data base which can be used to gain insight into implications of the aforementioned problems; the use of actual measurements introduces a realistic element of geophysical temporal variability. Assuming zonal symmetry (i.e., migrating tides superimposed on a zonal mean circulation), the radar measurements are sampled from the satellite perspective for orbital inclinations of 57° and 70°, and compared to the ground or true perspective. These comparisons provide realistic estimates of the errors to be expected when attempting to derive mean and tidal components from space-based measurements. For both diurnal and semidiurnal components, and the quoted satellite inclinations, acceptable errors (3–4 m/s rms) are obtained for data covering 24 h local time (i.e., ascending plus descending nodes); the corresponding errors for singlenode data (12 h local-time coverage) are of order 8–11 m/s, and therefore may not represent reliable estimates of the actual tidal components. There exist certain caveats in connection with the latter conclusion which are discussed.

Notes: The results of artificial insemination with donor semen (AID) are reported. The semen samples were stored in liquid nitrogen until needed. Eighty-two pregnancies occurred in 214 patients treated for 1610 cycles. Life table conception rates were 24·3±2·9 after six months and 32·7±3·3 after 12 months of treatment. Thirty of the 82 patients conceived within three treatment cycles and 53 by the sixth treatment cycle. Of the 82 pregnancies, there were 12 miscarriages, no stillbirths or neonatal deaths and one baby was born with a congenital abnormality.
