Notes: Abstract We have investigated dispersion relations of surface bands induced by Li adsorption on the Si(001) surface at room temperature by Angle-Resolved PhotoE-mission Spectroscopy (ARPES). The characteristic spectral changes in the Energy Distribution Curves (EDCs) with increasing Li coverage implicate that Li adatoms occupy on-top sites of the dimer-forming silicon atoms resulting in 0.5 and 1.0 monolayers for the completion of the first two Li-induced ordered (2×2): Li and (2×1): Li phase, respectively. The unique upward dispersions of the surface bands for these Li-induced structures are ascribed to the size effect of a Li adatom. We further discuss a mechanism which might account for the metallie peak found at the early stage of Li adsorption.

Notes: Summary Background To determine its roles in the diagnosis and the systemic evaluation of metastatic brain tumours, whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) using [18F]FDG was performed in 20 consecutive patients. Methods  All patients were thought to be suffering or needing to be differentiated from metastatic brain tumours. Nine patients had multiple brain lesions; six were older and showed a rim-enhancing lesion with surrounding oedema; seven had homogeneously enhancing periventricular lesion(s) on computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, thought to be central nervous system lymphomas. Two patients had skull mass(es) and two patients had a solid mass suspected to be, respectively, a haemorrhagic metastasis and a metastatic malignant melanoma. All of them received whole-body [18F]FDG PET and conventional systemic work-up for metastasis in order to compare the results of the two methods. Results  Metastatic brain tumours were diagnosed on whole-body [18F]FDG PET in eleven patients who had extracranial and intracranial hypermetabolic lesions. In nine of these, a conventional work-up also detected primary lesions which on whole-body [18F]FDG PET were seen to be hypermetabolic foci. Systemic lymph node metastases were detected by whole-body [18F]FDG PET only in two patients and histological diagnosis was possible by biopsy of lymph nodes rather than of brain lesions. In the remaining nine patients who had only intracranial hypermetabolic foci, histological diagnosis was made by craniotomy or stereotactic biopsy. It was confirmed that seven of nine patients were suffering from a primary brain tumour and two from metastatic carcinoma. None of the nine showed evidence of systemic cancer on conventional work-up. Histological diagnoses of the primary brain tumours were four cases of primary central nervous system lymphoma and one each of multifocal glioblastoma, Ewing's sarcoma, and cavernous angioma.  Patients felt no discomfort during the whole-body [18F]FDG PET procedure and there were no complications. The false negative rate in [18F]FDG PET and in conventional work-up was 15.4% and 30.7% respectively. There were no false positives on either [18F]FDG PET or conventional work-up. Conclusion  It is suggested that whole-body [18F]FDG PET is a safe, reliable, and convenient method for the diagnosis and systemic evaluation of patients thought to be suffering or needing to be differentiated from a metastatic brain tumour.

Notes: By impinging a beam of O+2 ions of energy 150 eV〈E〈1 keV on a Si(100) surface, we produced oxide films of varying thickness at room temperature. We find that the Si—O bond features of the films are quite similar to those of a thermally prepared vitreous SiO2 glass. We further observe that an intermediate range order in the form of n-member ring clusters with n=4 and n=6 exists in the resulting films.

Notes: The effects of heating rate and surface oxidation on magnetic induction of thin-gauged 3% Si–Fe strips have been investigated. Magnetic induction increased with increasing final annealing temperature. Before and after 1150 °C, the planar orientation of grains shifted from (100)[011] to (110)[001], resulting in magnetic induction higher than 1.90 T. Magnetic induction after final annealing was higher in case of a faster heating rate. This is because enough time for growth of (110) grains is given in the case. Irrespective of transient annealing temperature, magnetic induction after final annealing was mostly higher than 1.90 T. A maximum, 1.97 T, was obtained at a transient annealing temperature of 800 °C. This is because iron oxide formed at 800 °C inhibited the surface-energy-induced selective growth of (100)[011] grains during heating up to 1200 °C. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Entamoeba histolytica can cause invasive disease by disruption of the intestinal barriers and subsequent lysis of the intestinal cells. Adherence to and contact dependent killing of host cells requires the galactose inhibitable lectin. To elucidate the mechanism whereby E. histolytica influences host defence, the authors assessed the change of proinflammatory cytokine genes expressed by colon epithelial cells in response to co-culture with E. histolytica trophozoites and carbohydrates, including galactose, N-acetyl-galactosamine or N-acetyl-lactosamine, which prevented E. histolytica from attaching to epithelial cells. After HT-29 human colon epithelial cells were co-cultured with E. histolytica trophozoites in the presence or absence of carbohydrates (0.1–100 mm), RNA was extracted from the epithelial cells by an acid guanidinium thiocyanate–phenol–chloroform method. Cytokine gene expression was assessed by quantitative RT-PCR using a synthetic internal standard, and proteins were determined by ELISA. IL-8 mRNA expressed by HT-29 cells in response to E. histolytica trophozoites was downregulated in the presence of galactose, N-acetyl-galactosamine or N-acetyl-lactosamine (0.1–100 mm), and this was paralleled by decreased IL-8 protein secretion. GM-CSF and IL-1α/β mRNAs were also downregulated in those cells in the presence of these agents. These results suggest that the expression of proinflammatory cytokine genes could be inhibited by preventing E. histolytica from attaching to the host's colon epithelial cells.

Notes: Abstract  The alteration of renal deposition of mercury (Hg) after mercury vapor (Hg°) exposure was studied in mice pretreated with acivicin, a potent and irreversible inhibitor of γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT). Pretreatment with acivicin decreased renal Hg concentration by about 60% and significantly increased Hg concentration in the urine compared with the non-treated group. The results suggest that renal deposition of Hg after Hg° exposure depends on renal GGT, which plays an important role in the uptake of GSH or GSH conjugates filtered through the glomeruli. It seems that the mechanism of renal Hg deposition after Hg° exposure is similar to that after exposure to ionic Hg: a GGT-mediated incorporation of an Hg-GSH complex into renal tubular cells. The acivicin pretreatment after Hg° exposure did not affect Hg concentrations in the liver and erythrocytes.

Notes: Abstract Eleven patients with adult Hirschsprung's disease were treated at Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH, 8 cases) and Chosun University Hospital (CUH, 3 cases) between 1985 and 1992. Of the 11 patients, seven were male. The age of the patients ranged from 11 to 30 years, and all presented with chronic constipation and recurrent faecal impactions that required periodic enemas and laxatives. The Duhamel's operation, as a single or staged procedure, was performed in all patients. Levels of aganglionosis in 9 patients were confined to the rectosigmoid colon (82%). There were three major post-operative complications. Two patients developed fistula-in-ano at the anastomotic site, and one patient developed ileus. However, these complications resolved with conservative management. The longterm results were excellent except for one patient who developed impotence. The mean frequency of bowel movements was usually once or twice a day without the aid of other treatments. Our results indicate that Duhamel's operation is a highly acceptable procedure in the management of adult Hirschsprung's disease.
