Notes: Tanier spinach (Xanthosoma brasiliense, Araceae) is a common leafy vegetable in south-eastern Brazil. A cuneiform leaf blight which started at the edges of leaves and resulted in complete leaf decay has recently been observed. The causal agent was identified as Pseudomonas cichorii. This appears to be the first report of the disease.

Notes: Peruvian carrot soft rot occurs quite frequently in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, either under field conditions or after harvested roots have been stored. The etiology of the disease was investigated and the disease was found to be induced by Erwinia carotovora. This appears to be the first report of this disease.

Notes: Abstract Deciduous teeth affected by dentinogenesis imperfecta were obtained from two patients with osteogenesis imperfecta. Electronmicroscopy of the dentin revealed some structural alterations. The striation of the collagen fibrils was not clear, and the crystals were less dense than in normal dentin. The amino acid analysis of dentin collagen was slightly different from normal dentin. There were slight increases in the amounts of hydroxylysine. serine and acidic acids. On the other hand, lysine and arginine were reduced. The elevation of hexosyllysine content and an increase of carbohydrate were also observed. These results indicate that either dentin collagen is altered, or noncollagenous matrices associated with collagen are increased in dentinogenesis imperfecta dentin.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary To evaluate whether it is appropriate to estimate the postoperative curability of gastric cancer based on the 5-year survival rate, we compared 5- and 10-year survival rates in 477 primary gastric cancer patients who had undergone gastrectomy during the 8-year period from 1960–1967. In patients who had died more than 5 years after surgery, the cause of death was investigated. The 10-year survival rate of 315 curatively operated patients was 59.1%, 3.9% lower than the 5-year survival rate. Of 176 patients who survived more than 5 years postoperatively, only 9 (5.1%) died of cancer recurrence, suggesting that the 5-year survival rate adequately reflects the curative success of gastric cancer surgery.

Notes: Summary Of 40 gastric cancer patients leaving cancer cells in the oral stump of the resected stomach, 30 died of recurrence of cancer within 2 years after surgery. In 16 of them, patterns of recurrence were ascertained by relaparotomy or autopsy. Furthermore, recurrent cancer in the gastric stump was found in 10 of these patients. As histological features of primary cancer in stump recurrence patients, sporadic infiltration in the gastric wall and invasion into the lymph vessels in the submucosa were indicated. In infiltrative cancer, therefore, it is important to perform intraoperative cytologic or histologic examination of the oral stump of the resected stomach.
