Notes: [Auszug] In this communication, we report the occurrence in mycobacteria of an enzyme which catalyses the formation of ammonia from formamide. This enzyme activity was found, among various mycobacteria tested, only in saprophytic mycobacteria. Amidase activity towards formamide has not so far been ...

Notes: Summary Eighty-four previously treated adult patients with acute leukemia and malignant lymphoma were treated with (2″R)-4′-O-tetrahydropyranyladriamycin (THP). THP (10–55 mg/m2) was administered by i.v. bolus injection daily for acute leukemia, and according to three different schedules for malignant lymphoma: daily, weekly or once every 3–4 weeks. Complete and partial remission (CR and PR) were achieved by 1 (5%) and 3 of 19 patients with acute myelogenous leukemia and by 2 (13%) and 3 of 15 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, respectively. All CRs were in the groups receiving 25 mg/m2 THP daily. CR and PR were achieved by 6 (14%) and 8 of 42 patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and by 4 (50%) and 2 of 8 patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD), respectively. No particular sensitivity was found among the subtypes of NHL and HD. Response (CR+PR) was noted in 10 (40%) of 25 patients treated every 3–4 weeks, in 1 (17%) of 6 treated weekly, and in 9 (47%) of 19 treated daily. The major side effects were myelosuppression and gastrointestinal toxicities. Alopecia was observed in only 10 (12%) patients. ECG abnormalities were observed in 7 (10%) patients, all of whom had previously been treated with other anthracyclines. No severe cardiotoxicity was observed.

Notes: Summary The pattern of fibronectin (FN) distribution in human lung cancer was studied by indirect immunofluorescent staining, and by the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method in a total of 60 surgical specimens. They comprised 8 small cell carcinomas, 4 large cell carcinomas, 19 squamous cell carcinomas, 28 adenocarcinomas, and 1 adenoid cystic carcinoma. Of the 60 specimens 13 were FN-positive. They included 4 large cell carcinomas, 4 small cell carcinomas, 3 poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas, and 2 poorly differentiated and 1 moderatety differentiated adenocarcinomas. On the other hand, none of the well differentiated carcinomas was FN-positive around tumor cells. Our data suggest that undifferentiated, or poorly differentiated carcinomas of the lung tend to be FN-positive.

Notes: [Auszug] MYCOBACTERIA are able to grow in vitamin-free synthetic media and produce niacin. Human tubercle bacilli produce remarkably large amounts of niacin in culture compared with other mycobacteria1. The niacin test2,3, a biochemical method which differentiates human tubercle bacilli from other ...

Notes: Abstract Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from two cases of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis were analyzed for glycosaminoglycans and glycoproteins. The clinical courses of the two cases were entirely different. In one patient, signs and symptoms recurred despite repeated therapeutic bronchoalveolar lavages. In the other patient, three successive bronchoalveolar lavages brought about complete recovery. It was found that the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from the former case contained various subtypes of glycosaminoglycans [hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate A(C), dermatan sulfate, and heparan sulfate] and glycoprotein. On the other hand, the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from the latter case contained glycoprotein, but no detectable amounts of glycosaminoglycans. There was only a slight qualitative difference in glycoprotein of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid between the two cases. The presence or absence of glycosaminoglycans in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid may be related to the prognosis of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis.

Notes: Summary Ultrastructural studies on human lung were performed with special attention to the interstitial acid mucopolysaccharides by Ruthenium Red staining and several enzyme digetion tests withStreptomyces hyaluronidase, chondroitinase ABC, chondroitinase AC, heparinase, trypsin and collagenase. Periodic lateral granules on the major cross bands of collagen fibrils and amorphous coats on them became visible by Ruthenium Red staining. The surface of elastic fibres, associated microfibrils, and some fine fibrils 10–20 nm in diameter were stained. Ruthenium Red also stained the surface of fibroblast and smooth muscle cells, basement membrane and filamentous long segments. In the interstructural space, granular substances 10–80 nm in diameter and fine filaments 3–4 nm thick, which formed a fine reticular network, were clearly observed. They were not visible on the usual thin section. The granular substances were located on the cross points of the fine filaments. They spread continuously and connected with each of the cells and extracellular structures in the pulmonary interstitium. The results of the enzyme digestion tests on the Ruthenium Red-positive material are discussed.
