Notes: Thermally treated and uv-exposed hydrogen-loaded germanosilicate fibers are profiled with an atomic force microscope after cleaving the fiber in the exposed region and etching the cleaved endface in hydrofluoric acid. Thermally treated fibers etch symmetrically throughout the core region, but the uv-exposed fibers etch differently. In the uv-exposed fibers, both the etch depth and the refractive index are asymmetric. They are highest at the core-cladding interface on the side exposed to the uv radiation. We propose that a photolytic process increases the refractive index across the entire core, but the asymmetry is the result of transient heating due to uv absorption. Furthermore, we demonstrate that uniform circumferential exposure symmetrizes the etch depth and refractive index change and reduces the induced birefringence.

Notes: It is shown that P, Sb, and Ge ions implanted in SiO2 precipitate into spherical clusters of up to 1000 A(ring) diameter when heat treated in an oxygen-free ambient. This behavior is similar to that reported earlier for As implants. The clusters can be detected directly by transmission electron microscopy, or inferred from the unidirectional drift of the doped zone in a temperature gradient. Boron, a representative of group III, is the only element among those tested that does not migrate in a ∇T, suggesting the absence of phase separation.

Notes: Substantial thinning or polishing of diamond films is a nontrivial problem because of the extraordinary hardness of diamond. In this letter, we report the observation of massive thinning of CVD diamond film (from ∼220 to ∼120 μm thickness) by simple diffusional transfer of carbon from diamond to iron foil at 900 °C. The thinning process also creates relatively smooth surfaces by eliminating much of the roughness from the top faceted surface of the film. A very sharp Raman peak at 1332 cm−1 indicates that the high quality of the diamond bonding is not compromised by the thinning heat treatment. This technique may be useful for conveniently removing the undesirable part of the diamond films, such as the rough growth facets or the fine-grained bottom layer with inferior thermal properties.

Notes: Association and linkage studies of β2-adrenergic receptor (β2-ADR) polymorphisms in relation to the expression of asthmatic phenotypes and immune regulatory mechanisms have shown inconsistent results. In order to analyse the relevance of particular combinations of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or haplotypes of β2-ADR gene to bronchial asthma, bronchodilator response and total immunoglobulin E (IgE) we determined by direct DNA sequencing five SNPs (in positions: −47, −20, 46, 79, 252) in a group of 180 Caucasian subjects (110 patients with grass allergy and 70 nonatopic controls). The eight different β2-ADR haplotypes were identified, with three the most common of them representing 92% of the studied cohort. Significantly higher (pcor = 0.0045) bronchodilator response was observed in patients with homozygotic genotype 46A/A in comparison with respective homo- and hetero-zygotes. There was no significant difference in bronchodilator response when β2-ADR haplotypes were analysed. Significantly higher (pcor = 0.0005) total IgE levels were found in patients with β2-ADR haplotype −47T/−20T/46A/79C/252G and homozygotic carriers of 46A (pcor = 0.0015) and 79C (pcor = 0.003) genotypes. No significant associations were found in regards to asthmatic phenotype and atopy. These results indicate that depending on phenotype studied, either an individual β2-ADR SNP or β2-ADR haplotype might affect disease manifestation.

Notes: A method has been developed for fabricating fused silica capillary columns which have specific surface properties but still retain the excellent strength, flexibility, and resilience of pure fused silica. By using the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition process (MCVD), typically used for the production of optical fiber lightguides, inorganic dopants such as Al, Nd, Ge, and P can be introduced into the preform-tube by MCVD. Doped columns have a wide range of specific surface properties, and columns with undoped fused silica prepared by MCVD are more chemically inert and less acidic than columns prepared by conventional methods. This paper describes the method for fabricating capillaries and the initial studies to characterize them.
