    Studies on the fusion reaction in two species of Perophora (Ascidiacea) (1986)

    Notes: Abstract Histological and electron microscopical studies were made on the fusion reaction between homogeneic stolons of the colonial ascidians Perophora japonica Oka and P. sagamiensis Tokioka. When two stolons make a tip-to-side contact, the epidermal cells of the lateral portion of one stolon become thick and form a protrusion. In the fusion reaction of P. japonica, epidermal cells of each stolon at the contact area extend cell processes immediately after contact. After an occurrence of degenerated epidermal cells, blood interchange between the two stolons is initiated by a partial elimination of the epidermal cells. Even after the establishment of blood interchange, the cuticlelike structure is often observed to remain at the contact area. In the fusion reaction of P. japonica, many amoebocytes are attached to the epidermal cells until the complete elimination of epidermal cells. In the fusion reaction of P. sagamiensis, many lymphocytes as well as amoebocytes are attached to the epidermal cells at the contact area.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine theoretische Analyse für den Wärmeübergang bei Zwangskorivektion von äußeren in nicht-Newtonsche Fluide eintauchende Oberfläche unter Benutzung des Exponentialansatzes vorgeschlagen. Dabei wurde die früher für Newtonsche Fluide eingeführte Integralbehandlung erfolgreich auf nicht-Newtonsche Fluide erweitert, die über eine ebene Platte und einen Keil beliebigen Winkels strömen. Die integralen Impuls- und Energiegleichungen werden in ein Paar charakteristischer Gleichungen transformiert, die für den Geschwindigkeits-Formfaktor und für das Grenzschicht-Dickenverhältnis leicht gelöst werden können, wenn die Exponenten in den Ausdrücken für den Potenzansatz die Anströmgeschwindigkeit und die Änderung der Wandtemperatur spezifiziert sind. Es stellte sich heraus, daß eine asymptotische Näherung, die unter der Annahme großer Prandtl-Zahl abgeleitet wurde, für Fluide beliebigen Potenzansatzes praktisch gültig ist und dadurch für eine rasche und trotzdem genaue Abschätzung des örtlichen Wärmeübergangs an nicht-Newtonsche Fluide benützt werden kann.
    Notes: Abstract A theoretical analysis has been proposed for the forced convection heat transfer from external surfaces immersed in non-Newtonian fluids of the power-law model. The integral treatment previously introduced for Newtonian fluids has been successfully extended to the non-Newtonian fluids over a flat plate and a wedge of an arbitrary included angle. The integral momentum and energy equations are transformed into a pair of characteristic equations, which can readily be solved for the velocity shape factor and the boundary layer thickness ratio, once the exponents in the expressions for the power-law model, free stream velocity and wall temperature variation are specified. It has been also found that an asymptotic expression derived under the assumption of large Prandtl number, is valid practically for all power-law fluids, and hence, can be used for a speedy, and yet accurate estimation of the local heat transfer to non-Newtonian fluids.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurden Berechnungen über eine voll ausgebildete Strömung in Kanälen kreuzförmigen Querschnittes durchgeführt, die als mögliche Kandidaten für Kompaktwärmetauscher-Konfigurationen angesehen werden können. Dabei wurde eine Parameter-Studie über den Reibungsdruckabfall und den Wärmeübergang in Abhängigkeit von einem Parameter α durchgeführt, der ein Maß für die Abnahme der Querschnittsfläche darstellt (nämlich α=0 für einen quadratischen Kanal und α=1 für unendlich lange parallele Platten). Mit zunehmendem α nehmen sowohl die Nusselt-Zahl als auch der Reibungskoeffizient bis zu einem Minimalwert ab, um dann langsam wieder anzusteigen und übersteigen schließlich diejenigen Werte des quadratischen Kanales. Entsprechend zeigt der Wärmeübergangskoeffizient einen merklichen Anstieg für α〉0,4, was ein hervorragendes Verhalten der Wärmeübergangsflächen in Kanälen von kreuzförmigem Querschnitt vermuten läßt.
    Notes: Abstract Fully-developed flow calculations were performed on ducts of cross-shaped cross-section, which may be regarded as possible candidates for compact heat exchanger configurations. A parametric study was made on the friction and heat transfer characteristics in terms of the parameter α associated with the decrease in the cross-sectional area (namely, α=0 for a square duct and α→1 for infinite parallel plates). As increasing α, both the Nusselt number and friction coefficient decrease toward their minimum levels, but then, increase gradually, and overshoot those of a square duct. Consequently, the heat transfer coefficient shows a significant increase for α〉0.4, suggesting an excellent performance of heat transfer surfaces in the duct of cross-shaped cross-section.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Kárman-Pohlhausen-Integration wurde angewandt, um das Problem der freien Konvektion von einer vertikalen Fläche, die in ein thermisch geschichtetes poröses Medium eingebettet ist, zu lösen. Unter Hinzuziehung des Darcyschen Gesetzes der integralen Energiebeziehung und einer Hilfsbeziehung, die mit der Krümmung des Temperaturprofiles an der Wand zusammenhing, wurde eine geschlossene Form für die Nusselt-Zahl gefunden, jeweils bezogen auf den Fall, wenn die Verteilung der Wandtemperatur und der Umgebungstemperatur entsprechend eines Exponentialansatzes mit dem Abstand abnimmt. Ergebnisse, die für eine isotherme Platte mit dieser Methode berechnet wurden, sind in guter Übereinstimmung mit denen der exakten Lösung. Es werden auch Einflüsse der thermischen Schichtung auf den örtlichen Wärmeübergang diskutiert.
    Notes: Abstract The Kárman-Pohlhausen integral procedure was exploited to solve the problem of free convection from a vertical heated surface imbedded in a thermally stratified porous medium. Upon considering the Darcy law, the energy integral relation, and the auxiliary relation associated with the curvature of the temperature profile at the wall, a closed-form expression for the Nusselt number was reduced for the case where the distributions of the wall temperature and ambient temperature vary according to power-functions of distance. Results on an isothermal plate are found to be in close agreement with those from the exact solution. Effects of the thermal stratification on local heat transfer rates are also discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine Integral-Methode wurde zur Analyse von freier „Non-Darcy“-Konvektion entlang einer vertikalen flachen Platte und einem Kegel in einem gesättigten porösen Medium herangezogen. Eine flexible einparametrige Schar von Polynomen dritter Ordnung wurde verwendet, um große Änderungen in den Geschwindigkeits- und Temperaturprofilen im „Darcy“- bis hin zum „Forchheimer“-Bereich erfassen zu können. Die Forderung, daß das Temperaturprofil an der Wand keine Krümmung aufweisen darf, wurde als Hilfsbeziehung benutzt, um den Formfaktor zu bestimmen. Ein Vergleich der angenäherten Ergebnisse mit der exakten Lösung offenbart, daß die dargestellte Integral-Methode sich sehr gut eignet, um Wärmeübertragungswerte berechnen zu können.
    Notes: Abstract An integral treatment was proposed for analysis of non-Darcy free convection over a vertical flat plate and cone within a fluid-saturated porous medium. A flexible one-parameter family of third order polynomials was employed to cope with vast changes in the velocity and temperature profiles encountered in the Darcy flow limit through to the Forchheimer flow limit. Zero curvature requirement for the temperature profile at the wall was exploited as an auxiliary relation to determine the shape parameter. Comparison of the approximate results with the exact solution reveals a high performance of the present integral procedure for heat transfer rat prediction.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of the new substituted benzimidazole proton pump inhibitor, lansoprazole, on pharmacokinetics and metabolism of theophylline has been studied in healthy adults given oral lansoprazole 30 mg once daily for 11 days. On Days 4 and 11 of 300 mg aminophylline was simultaneously administered orally and blood samples for theophylline analysis were taken over 24 h. Urine samples were collected for up to 24 h and were assayed for theophylline and its major metabolites 1,3-dimethyluric acid (1,3-DMU), 1-methyluric acid (1-MU) and 3-methylxanthine (3-MX). The pharmacokinetic parameters of theophylline were determined, and the urinary recovery of unchanged theophylline and its major metabolites were calculated. After administration of lansoprazole for 4 days, no significant alteration in the terminal elimination half-life (t 1/2β) or the mean residence time (MRT) was detected. However, there was a significant decrease of about 13% in the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and a significant increase of about 19% in the apparent clearance (CLapp). Lansoprazole treatment for 11 days caused a significant decrease of approximately 12% in t 1/2β and about 10% in the MRT of theophylline, although neither AUC nor CLapp showed a significant alteration. The excretion of 3-MX in the urine was significantly increased by about 20% after lansoprazole treatment for 4 and 11 days, although there was no significant alteration in the excretion of unchanged theophylline, 1,3-DMU or 1-MU. The results indicate that repeated administration of lansoprazole to humans induces the hepatic microsomal P-450-dependent drug oxidation system that mediates N-1-demethylation of theophylline, consequently increasing its metabolism.
