Notes: Abstract. We analyze the evolution of multi-feature two-beam coupling, wherein each beam contains several spatial–temporal features (spatial patterns modulated by different signals), using a one-dimensional plane wave model to describe the evolution of paired components. This general scenario is of interest for analyzing signal-processing applications of photorefractives, such as source-separation by orthogonalization of source-modulated spatial patterns. We use singular-value decomposition (SVD) to express each beam as a simple superposition of modes that are both temporally uncorrelated and spatially orthogonal. We find a solution that is a natural matrix generalization of the scalar solution for simple two-beam coupling, and a test for its validity: the two operators that give the spatial overlap associated with the temporal basis signals in the two beams must commute. Equivalently, this means that the same set of signals must be modulating the SVD modes in the two beams. Then the SVD modes are preserved in the two-beam coupling evolution, with only their amplitudes changing. Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Eckard Krätzig on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

Notes: Abstract In order to apply highT c superconductivity to general microwave cavities and to shielding devices for quasistationary magnetic fields, we have developed an electrophoretic coating technique. This work reports about the continuation of our experiments. More than 60 samples of electrophoretic layers deposited on silver substrates were fabricated by systematically varying the processing parameters. The r.f. surface resistance measured at 21.5 GHz and 77 K at low excitation fields is found to be a sensitive measure of the quality of the samples and falls rapidly with increasing average grain size. Textured electrophoretic layers of large grain size show the smallest sensitivity ofR s against the r.f. surface magnetic fieldH s. The magnetic sensitivitydR s /dH s is found to be in direct proportion toR s (77 K). After optimizing the sintering procedure the electrodes of the prototype cavity for a compact hydrogen maser were coated. The cavity was successfully operated at 1.42 GHz, and a surface resistance of 1 mΩ was achieved at 77 K. This compares to 4 mΩ for copper at the same temperature.

Notes: A simplified mode of differential phase contrast Lorentz microscopy for the study of magnetic domain structures in thin films is proposed and demonstrated. This mode employs a single annular detector in a scanning transmission electron microscope rather than the specialized split detectors that have been previously used. The resulting signal is sufficiently linear with magnetic field strength to allow quantitative data to be obtained on the domain configurations and the natures of the domain walls. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
