    Notes: Abstract The wall of mature ascospores ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae showed in sections under the electron microscope a dark outer layer and a lighter inner layer. The latter was composed of a greyish inner part and a light outer part. During germination, the spore grew out at one side and the dark outer layer was broken. Of the light inner layer, the inner greyish part became the wall of the vegetative cell, but the extented part of the cell had a new wall.

    Notes: Abstract Cells of 3 yeast species capable of assimilating methanol have been examined by electron microscopy. When grown on methanol as the sole source of carbon and energy they contained many microbodies. Cells grown on glucose or ethanol either did not contain such bodies at all, or only to a limited extent.

    Notes: Summary Strains of Debaryomyces hansenii, Deb. kloeckeri, Deb. subglobosus, Deb. nicotianae and their imperfect forms Torulopsis famata and T. candida were found to be able to use creatine and creatinine as a sole source of nitrogen. Most strains could assimilate creatine when tested by the auxanographic method, while creatinine was only assimilated in liquid medium. In several instances the reaction with creatine in the auxanogram was positive, and in the liquid medium negative. We have considered the taxonomic value of the utilization of creatine and creatine in the first place for distinction between the four Debaryomyces species, and in the second place for the differentiation of the four species as a group from other species.

    Notes: Summary Cells of Pityrosporum ovale were prepared for electron microscopy by different methods of fixation and embedding, all of them causing some degree of damage to the cells. Apart from the usual organelles seen in other yeast cells, a body was found which showed an electron-dense outer layer and an electron-light centre when stained with permanganate. The cell wall showed layers of different electron-density. Buds were formed at one pole only, leaving a collar on the mother cell.

    Notes: Abstract Cells of the yeast Saccharomycopsis capsularis fused in pairs after dissolving of part of the cross wall between them near the lateral wall. After nuclear migrations through the opening, the cross wall was closed again and the cells at both sides became asci. The wall of the ascospores developed from a prospore wall. Between the two unit membranes a very thin dark layer broadened to the dark layer of the wall and after that, the light inner layer developed. Immature spores in the strain studied had a ledge which disappeared during maturation.

    Notes: Abstract Three types of structure of the ascospore wall were found among the haploid Saccharomyces species examined: a warty wall (S. rouxii), a smooth wall with a single electron-light inner layer (S. bailii) and a smooth wall with a double light inner layer (S. montanus, S. florentinus). The latter type also occurred in Kluyveromyces thermotolerans and K. waltii. In K. fragilis spores the wall had a single light inner layer. The taxonomic implications of these findings were discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Bud formation in yeasts with bipolar budding was studied by electron microscopy of thin sections. Budding in yeasts of the speciesSaccharomycodes ludwigii, Hanseniaspora valbyensis andWickerhamia fluorescens resulted in concentric rings of scar ridges on the wall of the mother cell. The wall between the ridges consisted of the scar plug left by the former budding and opened up in the formation of the next bud. The wall of the bud arose from under the wall of the mother cell. In the yeasts of the speciesNadsonia elongata more than one bud might be formed from the same plug. InSchizoblastosporion starkeyi-henricii the scar ridges were close together and apparently not separated by the entire plug. In all species a cross wall was formed between mother cell and bud which consisted of an electron-light layer between two layers of more electron-dense material. The cells separated along the light layer.
