Abstract An outline of the stratigraphical relationships of the Triassic of Mt. San Giorgio (Kanton Tessin, Switzerland) is presented, followed by a list of the vertebrate fauna of the Anisian and Ladinian (Middle Triassic). The fauna deals with marine fishes (Selachii, Actinopterygii, Coelacanthini) and marine or amphibious living reptiles (Ichthyosauria, Placodontia, Rynchocephalia, Prolacertilia, Sauropterygia), with the exception of the Pseudosuchian Ticinosuchus. Mt. San Giorgio is the richest place in the world where Middle Triassic marine fishes and reptiles are found nowadays. Investigation of the Sauropterygia and Placodontia shows that no affinity between these two orders exists. They are both descended from embolomer labyrinthodonts and have with other branches independently crossed over the amphibian-reptilian line of transition. The class Reptilia is not a genetical unit, but a grade of vertebrate evolution. Finally, reference is made to the aims of a new excavation in the Anisian (Grenzbitumenhorizont) of Mt. San Giorgio. In order to be able to reconstruct the repeated changes of the environment and its inhabitants on the north coast of the Tethyan Sea, the relations between sediments and fossils are studied and the fossil content of each stratum is observed.
