Notes: Abstract: Objective: To investigate the effects of clodronate on clinical disease activity, inflammatory alterations and cartilage destruction, periarticular and axial bone volume and bone turnover in chronic antigen-induced arthritis (AIA; day 28).¶Methods: Rats with AIA were treated with clodronate (5 mg/kg/day continuously; 20 mg/kg/day intermittently or high-dose with 300 mg/kg 3 hours after arthritis induction +20 mg/kg/day continuously, respectively). Joint pathology was examined by histology. Bone volume and cellular turnover parameters of the right tibia head and the third lumbar vertebra were evaluated by histomorphometry. The findings were compared with those of healthy controls, sham-treated AIA and AIA treated continuously with 250 μg/kg of dexamethasone.¶Results: All three therapy regimens with clodronate resulted in a significant reduction of joint swelling, histopathological inflammatory changes and cartilage destruction in comparison with sham-treated AIA. The antiinflammatory effect of high-dose clodronate was comparable with dexamethasone. The intermittent administration of 20 mg/kg/day of clodronate completely prevented periarticular bone loss by reduction of bone resorption without affecting bone formation at the periarticular and axial bone. Both continuous treatment with 5 mg/kg/day of clodronate and high-dose clodronate therapy partially prevented periarticular bone loss and reduced parameters of bone formation at the axial bone to values below those of healthy controls.¶Conclusion: High-dose clodronate therapy exerts an excellent preventive effect on clinical disease activity and on joint destruction in AIA. However, continuous treatment with high doses of clodronate may result in a low turnover state of bone remodelling.¶

Notes: Abstract Most of the existing lunar and planetary gravity data are in the form of LOS (line-of-sight) components which cannot be used for conventional geophysical modelling. Current methods to invert LOS data yield non-unique or poorly constrained results or results of low spatial resolution. An alternate method presented here promises to produce unique, detailed and more reliable results. It utilizes the fact that three non-coplanar LOS acceleration vectors determined at different times at some point of observation uniquely define the total acceleration vector at that point. Vector analysis shows that the local cartesian componentsg i of the total gravity anomaly vector may be obtained by inversion of the system $$a_{ij} g_j = A_i^2 $$ where thea ij andA i 's are, respectively, the local cartesian components and scalar magnitudes of the three required LOS acceleration vectors. In principle, the method is applicable to lunar as well as planetary LOS data.

Notes: Abstract The pronounced positive gravity anomalies in the lunar circular maria imply lack of isostatic compensation of the lunar mascons. This lack of isostasy is hard to reconcile with the rheological properties of the lunar crust. Analysis of the negative ring anomalies that appear to surround the major positive gravity peaks indicates that associated with each mascon is a mass deficit of approximately the same size. In view of the lunar rheology these mass deficits most probably represent compensating mass deficits beneath the lunar mascon maria. Consequently, most lunar mascons appear to be near isostatic equilibrium, and the observed gravity anomalies may be essentially the superposition of positive gravity peaks due to the basaltic mare fill, and less pronounced, broader gravity lows due to the compensating mass deficits at depth.

Notes: Abstract A mascon model is proposed in which the mass excess of the mare basalts in the circular maria is supported isostatically by mass deficits at depth. The model predicts the observed positive gravity anomalies surrounded by negative ring anomalies and explains the absence of gravity anomalies over the irregular maria. The model implies that mare basalts were derived by partial melting of a source region at depth due to pressure relief resulting from the excavation of the circular mare basins, and that the crystalline residuum in the source region is of lower density than the original source rock. The trace element enrichment and near cotectic character of Apollo 11 and 12 lavas reported by some investigators may be caused by extensive magma fractionation enroute from an origin in the circular maria to the final, distant emplacement sites.

Notes: Abstract Planetary gravity fields represented in terms of spherical harmonics or surface mass distributions\ do not have the necessary resolution to permit gravity analysis of local features. Doppler gravity maps representing residual line-of-sight (LOS) accelerations have much greater resolution but cannot be used for conventional geophysical analysis due to the geometric distortions inherent in LOS gravity patterns and lack of normalization of LOS data. However, LOS gravity data may be converted to vertical gravity anomalies by expressing the anomalous local gravitational potential over small rectangular areas in terms of a modified double Fourier series constrained by local Doppler gravity data. The vertical derivative of the resulting potential yields the vertical gravity components at desired altitudes. The resolution of the resulting normalized free air anomaly maps is limited only by that of the original Doppler gravity data. Extended gravity maps may be constructed this way using a moving window approach. It is anticipated that much of the lunar frontside can be mapped at resolutions ranging from 1 to 4 deg of arc.

Notes: Glass transition temperatures Tg of diol modified epoxy resin networks were determined using thermomechanical analysis. These temperatures depend on concentration and chain length of the diol and furthermore on the type of the accelerator. Measurements of uniaxial compressive modulus gave a similar dependence for the shear modulus G and the network density.
