    Notes: Abstract The oxidation behavior of Ni-13.5-33.7Cr-1ThO2 alloys in flowing oxygen at 150 Torr was investigated in the temperature range 1000–1200°C. Gravimetric measurements of the oxidation kinetics have been combined with microstructural studies of the reacted samples in order to evaluate the reaction mechanisms. The oxide products formed on the alloys were a function of Cr content, sample surface preparation, reaction time, and temperature. The presence of ThO2 appears to produce two effects during alloy oxidation. First, enhanced Cr diffusion to the alloy surface results in rapid formation of a Cr2O3 subscale beneath NiO on Ni-13.5Cr-1ThO2 and selective oxidation of Cr for Ni-22.6Cr-1ThO2. Second, the mechanism of formation of Cr2O3 is apparently different from that for simple Ni-Cr alloys, resulting in about an order of magnitude reduction in the Cr2O3 growth rate. The oxidationvaporization of Cr2O3 to CrO3 becomes rate controlling for the higher Cr alloys after only a few hours of exposure at 1200°C.

    Notes: One of the major reasons coatings are used in internal combustion engines is to enhance the oxidation/corrosion resistance in contaminated corrosive environments. Such atmospheres are often encountered in diesel and utility gas turbines. Aircraft gas turbines are usually subjected to simple oxidation conditions, since the environment is generally cleaner and the operating temperatures higher than in ground-based engines.The primary source of corrosive species (sulfur, vanadium and even sodium) is in the fuel; but airborne salts are a concern, particularly for those engines operating close to to ocean. Diesel engines in ships may run on fuels containing up to 5% S, 400 ppm V, and 100 ppm Na.

Das Versagen der Proben innerhalb der Deckschicht oder in der Grenzfläche wird von der Bildung und Vereinigung von sekundären Rissen in der Deckschicht begleitet. Diese Vorgänge verursachen das nichtlineare Verformungsverhalten und eine von der Rißgeschwindigkeit abhängige Bruchmorphologie.
    Notes: The fracture energy of plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coatings of ZrO2 · MgO, ZrO2 · Y2O3, ZrO2 · CaO · Al2O3, and Al2O3 · TiO2 on metal substrates is obtained for both adhesive and cohesive failure modes of the coatings using notched layer-bonded bend test specimens. The generalized energy release rate was employed as a measure of the fracture energy. It takes account of the nonlinearity found in the load-deflection curves of the specimens. The failure of the specimens within the coating or at the interface is accompanied by the formation and linking of secondary cracks in the coating. This causes the non-linearity in the deformation behaviour and a rate-dependent failure morphology.
