Notes: We propose to utilize glass plates coated with indium tin oxide (ITO) as far-infrared dichroic mirrors, e.g., in optoelectronic terahertz spectroscopy for purposes such as electro-optic detection of terahertz radiation or in time-resolved experiments with pump pulses in the visible or near-infrared spectral range and probe pulses at terahertz frequencies. Measurements of the complex reflection and transmission coefficients in the spectral range from 0.1 to 2.8 THz indicate that commercially available ITO glass is suitable for this purpose. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Far-infrared (terahertz) pulses can be generated by photoionization of electrically biased gases with amplified laser pulses [T. Löffler, F. Jacob, and H. G. Roskos, Appl. Phys. Lett. 77, 453 (2000)]. The efficiency of the generation process can be significantly increased when the absolute gas pressure is raised because it is then possible to apply higher bias fields close to the dielectric breakdown field of the gas which increases with the pressure. The dependence of the THz output on the optical pump power does not show any indication of saturation, making the plasma emitter an interesting source for THz pulses especially in conjunction with terawatt laser systems. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electric field-induced second-harmonic generation (EFISHG) is shown to be a very powerful method for contactless sampling of high-speed electrical signals on silicon millimeter-wave devices. We present picosecond resolution EFISHG measurements of 2 GHz sinusoidal signals on a photoconductive silicon-on-sapphire antenna. We further demonstrate the application of the EFISHG technique for spatial mapping of free-running microwave signals in silicon. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present an experimental demonstration of the generation of far-infrared (terahertz) pulses by photoionization of electrically biased air with amplified laser pulses. The current surge following photoionization of the air with an applied bias field of 10.6 kV/cm leads to the emission of THz pulses with an intensity which can be almost as high as that of THz pulses radiated from a large-area intrinsic-field GaAs emitter. The spectra peak at higher frequency than those of biased large-area GaAs emitters. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Several monoclonal antibodies directed against the human CD14 antigen have been established. We now report that the antibody My4, but not LeuM3, reacts with porcine monocytes. Among porcine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), 14.6% of the cells stain with the CD14 antibody My4, which is similar to the percentage obtained with the antiporcine monocyte antibody 74-22-15. Two-colour immunofluorescence reveals that My4 and 74-22-15 antigens are coexpressed on the same cells, and cell sorter-purified My4+ cells exhibit the morphology of monocytes. Whole blood analysis (which also shows staining of granulocytes) reveals that the average percentage of My4+ monocytes amongst all leucocytes is 5.8% with 580 cells/μl. Furthermore, porcine peritoneal macrophages (PM) and alveolar macrophages (AM), both stain for My4, with a four-fold lower level on AM. Treatment of cells with phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C decreases My4 staining, but does not affect staining with antibody 74-22-15. Immunoprecipitation with the My4 antibody from surface labelled pig mono-nuclear cells demonstrates a 54 kDa band similar to human CD14, and Western blotting with pig serum demonstrates two bands similar to the alpha and beta forms of human soluble CD14. Finally, the My4 antibody is capable of blocking lipopolysaccharide- (LPS)-induced interleukin-6 production in isolated PBMC. These data show that the My4 antibody recognizes genuine CD14 on porcine monocytes and macrophages.

Notes: Summary The oxazaphosphorine analog ifosfamide (IFO) has demonstrated an increased therapeutic index in a variety of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies compared with its parent compound cyclophosphamide. A fractionated dose schedule over 5 days as continuous infusion in combination with the uroprotective agent sodium-2-mercapto-ethane-sulfonate (mesna) is considered to provide an improved therapeutic/toxic ratio. Stability data of IFO demonstrate long-term stability for use in disposable infusion pumps as outpatient treatment. In all, 52 patients with various malignancies were entered in a feasibility study to receive outpatient continuous infusion of IFO. All patients were required to have a subcutaneous venous port system implanted. The following drug combinations were used: IFO as single agent, IFO/mitoxantrone, IFO/carboplatinum/etoposide, IFO/etoposide/MTX, IFO/epirubicin. Mitoxantrone and epirubicin were given as continuous infusion together with IFO. Starting dose of IFO was between 1.6–2.0 g/m2/day×5 and was increased in absence of major hematologic or peripheral toxicitiy. Mesna was given in combination with IFO as continuous infusion at a dose of 50% of that calculated for IFO. No renal, bladder or central nervous system toxicity was observed. In 247 courses of outpatient continuous ifosfamide infusion only few technical complications due to improper handling were documented.

Notes: Abstract Background: Diarrhea is one of the most disturbing effects of chemotherapy, affecting quality of life on the one hand and limiting applicable doses on the other. Irinotecan (CPT-11) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) are associated with an elevated risk of developing severe diarrhea. Standard therapy consists of high-dose loperamide, but is associated with frequent failure. Other therapeutic regimens are still experimental. Endoscopic examination of a patient with severe loperamide-resistant diarrhea after CPT-11 chemotherapy revealed an inflammation of the ileo-coecal region. Oral therapy with the topical corticosteroid budesonide was immediately effective. This led to a phase I study of budesonide in CPT-11- and 5-FU-induced and loperamide-refractory diarrhea. Patients and methods: Fourteen patients with CPT-11- and seven patients with 5-FU-induced grade 3–4 (NCI/WHO) diarrhea and loperamide failure were enrolled in this study. All patients had metastatic colorectal cancer. Results: In 86% of the CPT-11- and 57% of the 5-FU-treated patients with grade 3–4 diarrhea and loperamide failure, treatment with budesonide resulted in a reduction of diarrhea severity by at least two grades. Conclusions: The orally administered topical active steroid budesonide is highly effective in the therapy of loperamide-refractory chemotherapy (CPT-11 or 5-FU) -induced diarrhea.
