Notes: Propofol was compared to methohexitone for induction of anaesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy. Seizures were significantly shorter after the use of propofol, in respect of both visible seizures and duration of cerebral electrical seizure activity. This suggests the possibility that additional treatments may be needed for the same clinical effect in psychiatric illness when propofol is used as the induction agent. Propofol was more effective than methohexitone at obtunding the hypertensive response to electroconvulsive therapy without causing significant hypotension.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ein iteratives Verfahren zur Lösung quasilinearer hyperbolischer Gleichungen des Typs $$ - [p_1 (u_x ,x,t)]_x + [p_2 (u_t ,x,t)]_t = f(x,t)$$ im Gebiet (0, 1)×(0,T) wird entworfen.
Notes: Abstract An iterative method of solving quasilinear hyperbolic equations of the type $$ - [p_1 (u_x ,x,t)]_x + [p_2 (u_t ,x,t)]_t = f(x,t)$$ in the domain (0, 1)×(0,T) is proposed. For each given initial-boundary-value problem of this type with boundary conditions of the first kind (second kind), a conjugate problem of the same type that has boundary conditions of the second kind (first kind) is defined. From the relations connecting the solutions of a pair of conjugate problems, a series of wave equations is created. The method proposed consists in calculating the solutions of the wave equations of this series. Theoretical proof of the convergence of the solutions of the wave equations to the solutions of the conjugate quasilinear problems is left as an open question. However, numerical results are presented to demonstrate that, under favorable circumstances, the solutions of the wave equations do converge to the solutions of the conjugate quasilinear problems.

Notes: Abstract A method, called the method of pseudolinear equations, for solving a class of quasilinear hyperbolic initial-boundary-value problems of second order in one space dimension is investigated. The finite-difference implementation of the method is improved vs. a previous version by elimination of iteration. The results of a series of numerical experiments show the improved finite-difference implementation to be between 1.8 and 13.9 times faster than solution of nonlinear systems of finite-difference approximations of the quasilinear hyperbolic problems by Newton's method. However, in cases with large nonlinearities, the method of pseudolinear equations shows instability, while Newton's method converges after a large amount of computing time.

Notes: Abstract A longitudinal investigation of the stability and sensitivity of several subjective social indicators is presented. Over a seven year period, data collected from 93 Canadians indicated moderate stability for measures of enjoyment, satisfaction, and life quality. When respondents were divided into “change” and “no change” groups on the basis of their self-reported health status, the self-anchoring ladder of present life quality was found to be sensitive to change. Implications of this methodological inquiry are examined.

Notes: Abstract The relationship between subjective well-being and age is equivocal. This issue is addressed by two studies. In the first, a cross-sectional design with over 1000 participants revealed a positive association between well-being and age, with age as the most significant predictor of well-being and age, with age as the most significant predictor of well-being using multiple regression analysis. A longitudinal study found less stability in well-being than has been found in the past. Differential age experiences and access to available resources may help to explain the results.
