Notes: Summary In a case of gallbladder infection, bacteriological studies revealed the presence ofActinomyces israelii, an organism rarely encountered in this site. While direct or indirect immunofluorescence techniques would undoubtedly provide the best identification criteria in the shortest time, the antisera were not available when the study was conducted. The most rapid technique for a tentative identification of isolated colonies of the strain was based upon detection of glycosidases together with catalase activity. Although not sufficient sinceA. israelii andA. naeslundii present the same enzymatic profiles, the other species and the most closely related genera can nevertheless be excluded by this method. Gas liquid chromatography — indeed useful yet much slower — contributes to identification but is not suitable for differentiation at the species level. Accurate identification was obtained by classical, time-consuming techniques. DistinguishingA. israelii fromA. naeslundii ten days following pathogen isolation can only be of limited practical interest.

Notes: Summary This study is aimed at the evaluation of a 1% clindamycin hydrochloride containing gel on the microbial flora of periodontal pockets deeper than 5 mm. In order to achieve that purpose, 20 patients with pocketing in the premolar-molar regions were selected. Active and placebo gel were inserted once during the first 2 weeks of this experimental study. Microbial samplings were performed 1, 2, 4 and 12 weeks after the experiment started. The samples were submitted to microscopic examination and also to culture. Changes in the microbial content of the periodontal pockets treated by subgingival scaling and clindamycin 1% gel were significant, compared with those obtained with subgingival scaling and placebo gel, particularly with respect to anaerobic black-pigmented bacteria and the motile gram-negative flora. However, after 3 months, most of the treated cases were recolonized by the same initial species, though never at pre-clindamycin levels. In the light of this study, it will be concluded that the use of a small amount of clindamycin hydrochloride inserted into a periodontal pocket, once a week for 2 weeks as a complement to periodontal subgingival scaling, is beneficial in the treatment of adult periodontitis, by eliminating more effectively the microbial pocket colonization.

Notes: Summary Carbohydrate fermentation by anaerobic gram-negative bacilli was easily detected using Taxo-Disks placed on supplemented Columbia Agar. After incubation, two drops of a 0.2% solution of bromothymol blue were added to each disk: yellow coloring was indicative of a positive reaction. In the esculin hydrolysis test paper disks impregnated with 2 mg of esculin were placed on the same medium. The results were read after addition of two drops of a 10% solution of ferric chloride. When testing slow-growing and/or serophilic anaerobic gram-negative bacilli, such asBacteroides melaninogenicus orBacteroides oralis, the supplemented Columbia Agar was enriched with 10% sterile horse serum. Discrepancies between results with the conventional tube technique and the disk method were occasionally observed with salicin only.

Notes: Abstract Forty-nine isolates of Campylobacter pylori were tested for their susceptibility to twenty antibiotics and four anti-ulcer agents by an agar dilution technique. Penicillin and amoxycillin were the most active drugs (MIC90, 0.06 μ/ml); erythromycin, cefazolin, minocycline, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and gentamicin were sligthtly less active (MIC90, ≤ 1 μg/ml). Moderate activity was found for doxycyclin, rifampin, nitrofurantoin, norfloxacin, pefloxacin, enoxacin, paromomycin, metronidazole and tinidazole. All strains were resistant to trimethoprim (MIC 〉 512 μg/ml). Nalidixic acid (MIC90, 〉 256 μg/ml) and colistin (MIC90, 〉 64 μgg/m1) had little to no activity. Of four anti-ulcer drugs, only bismuth subcitrate showed activity (MIC90, 64 μg./ml). Strains resistant to all 4-quinolones were found in patients who had previously received ofloxacin as part of a clinical trial aimed at eradication of C. pylori. These isolates remained susceptible to amoxycillin, tetracyclines and to other classes of antibiotics.

Notes: Abstract Two questions concerning the location of a single facility by a voting process are investigated for transportation networks: - What is the maximum number of customers located on the network preferring some rival point over a voting solution? - How does the average distance of the customers to the facility increase when a voting location instead of a Weber location is chosen for the facility? Complete answers are given for general networks and for certain planar networks, viz., the so-called generalized cacti.

Notes: Abstract The cellular fatty acids of 31 strains belonging to theStreptococcus milleri group were analysed by capillary gas-liquid chromatography. Results were compared with findings from biochemical differentiation of the strains intoStreptococcus constellatus (two strains),Streptococcus anginosus (16 strains) andStreptococcus intermedius (13 strains). Eight strains of various other streptococci were included as internal references, including three strains ofStreptococcus morbillorum, three strains ofβ-hemolytic streptococci, and two strains of enterococci. TheStreptococcus milleri strains formed a very homogeneous group according to fatty acid composition and were easily differentiated from other groups. However, within the group, it was not possible to differentiateStreptococcus constellatus, Streptococcus anginosus andStreptococcus intermedius by fatty acid composition alone.
