Notes: Abstract The etiological role of concha bullosa in chronic sinusitis is controversial. Previous investigators have not studied the relationship between the location of concha bullosa and different chronic sinusitis patterns We performed coronal paranasal sinuses CT in 100 Chinese patients with signs and symptoms of chronic sinusitis and recorded the presences and location of the concha bullosa and the pattern of sinonasal disease. The incidence of concha bullosa was 47 %. The presence of concha bullosa showed no statistically significant association with different patterns of chronic sinusitis.

Notes: Abstract In order to study the features of sinonasal polyposis (SNP) on CT, 100 consecutive coronasal sinus CT examinations done for chronic inflamamtory sinonasal disease were reviewed. The CT findings of the 27 fully documented SNPs were analyzed. All our SNPs were bilateral. There was a strong tendency for extensive involvement. Nasal polyps were seen in 22 of 27 (81%); bony trabecular deossification in 23 of 27 (85%); widening of infundibulum in 26 of 27(96%). We discovered a new sign “truncation of the bony middle turbinate”, where the bulbous part of bony middle turbinate was missing, in 51 of 26 (58 %) of SNP patients without a previous history of middle turbinectomy, 12 of 15(80%) were bilateral. The one SNP patient (1 of 27) with previous middle turbinectomy was not regarded to be real truncation. Truncation of the bony middle turbinate is a characteristic and easily recognizable ancillary sign, and is not seen in other patterns of sinusitis. Together with other features on coronal sinus CT, this adds diagnostic confidence in diagnosing sinonasal polyposis.

Notes: Watt-level cw solid-state sources in the millimeter-wave region are needed for plasma diagnostics. Monolithic metal-grid arrays containing in excess of 1000 Schottky diodes have produced watt-level output at 66 GHz in a doubler configuration, in excellent agreement with the large-signal predictions of the frequency multiplication. Current efforts are concentrated on fabricating and developing arrays of a novel barrier-intrinsic-N+ (BIN) diode which promise increased performance in a tripler configuration. Initial tests will be made for a configuration where a tripling efficiency of 35% at an output frequency of 100 GHz is predicted. Eventual goals are monolithic BIN diode grids operating at 1 THz.

Notes: Abstract Proton MR spectra of the basal ganglia were obtained from 28 patients, 24 male and 14 female, median age 16.3 months (5 weeks to 31 years). They included 17 patients with normal MRI of the basal ganglia without metabolic disturbance (control group) and 11 patients with various metabolic diseases: one case each of high serum sodium and high serum osmolarity, cobalamin C deficiency, Leigh disease, Galloway-Mowat syndrome, Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease, hemolytic-uremic syndrome and Wilson disease and two cases of Alagille syndrome and methylmalonic acidemia with abnormal MRI of the basal ganglia or blood or urine analysis (abnormal group). The MR spectrum was measured by using STEAM. The MR-visible water content of the region of interest was obtained. Levels of myoinositol, choline, creatine and N -acetylaspartate were measured using a semiquantitative approach, with absolute reference calibration. In the control group, there was a gradual drop of water content over the first year of life; N -acetylaspartate, creatine and myoinositol levels showed no significant change with age, in contrast to the occipital, parietal and cerebellar regions. Choline showed a gradual decrease for the first 2 years of life and then remained fairly constant. In the abnormal group the water content was not significantly different. N -Acetylaspartate was decreased in patients with high serum sodium and high serum osmolarity, cobalamin C deficiency, Leigh disease and one case of methylmalonic acidemia. Decreased creatine was also found in Leigh disease, and decreased choline in Galloway-Mowat syndrome and Wilson disease. Myoinositol was elevated in the patient with abnormally high serum sodium, and decreased in the hemolytic-uremic syndrome.

Notes: Abstract Invasive cystic thymoma is reported in two siblings (an 11-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy) and the radiographic, CT and ultrasonographic features are described. The tumours were removed by thoracotomy. Familial thymic masses are reviewed, and the imaging differential diagnosis of cystic anterior mediastinal mass in a child is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Ordinary Portland cements mixed with various amounts of chromium metal in the form of nitrates (Cr(NO3)3), to simulate industrial waste, have been studied by electron microscopy techniques, i.e. scanning electron and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Trivalent chromium was found to be chemically incorporated in all hydrated cement phases, and appeared to substitute for silicon in calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), which is the major product of hydration. Chromium was also concentrated in polycrystalline Ca-Cr-rich phases.

Notes: Abstract Axillary lymph node status is important in the staging of breast carcinoma. To evaluate the accuracy of technetium-99m sestamibi breast scintigraphy in detecting metastatic axillary lymph nodes as compared with other accepted imaging modalities, we performed99mTc-sestamibi breast scintigraphy, conventional mammography and ultrasound in 36 patients with primary untreated breast carcinoma. With histopathology as the gold standard,99mTc-sestamibi breast scintigraphy was found to yield true-positive results in 7 of 11 cases (64%) of axillary lymph node metastases and true-negative results in 18 of 20 cases (90%); it has an accuracy of 81%, a positive predictive value of 77.8% and a negative predictive value of 81.8%.
