    Notes: Summary The role of atrial distension and/or adrenergic mechanisms in the regulation of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) secretion, plasma immunoreactive ANP, norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E) and left atrial diameter at rest, during and after graded bicycle exercise has been studies in 8 healthy male subjects after single doses of placebo, tertatolol 5 mg (a non-selective β-adrenoceptor blocker), prazosin 1 mg (an α1-adrenoceptor antagonist) and their combination. Systolic and diastolic left atrial diameters were measured before, during and just after exercise by bidimensional echocardiography. Exercise caused an increase in plasma ANP, which was greater after tertatolol alone, and tertatolol plus prazosin, than after placebo or prazosin alone; the mean area under the plasma ANP concentration curve was increased by 35% after tertatolol alone, by 45% after tertatolol and prazosin compared to placebo, and by 82% and 94%, respectively when compared to prazosin alone. The rise in plasma ANP was more marked during the post-exercise period: 80% after tertatolol alone, 67% after tertatolol and prazosin compared to placebo, and 133% and 115%, respectively, compared to prazosin alone. The rise in plasma ANP was accompanied by an increase in both the systolic and diastolic atrial diameter, which was also significantly greater after tertatolol alone and the combination than placebo, or after prazosin alone. β-Adrenoceptor blockade alone did not affect the plasma catecholamine concentrations, but the exercise-induced increase in plasma norepinephrine was significantly potentiated by prazosin and by prazosin plus tertatolol, and that of plasma epinephrine by the drug combination. We conclude that potentiation of the exercise-induced increase in plasma ANP by β-blockers may be due to atrial stretching consequent on the decreased myocardial contractility and relaxation, and not to alpha-1 adrenoceptor stimulation. Any increase in plasma catecholamines did not play an important role in ANP secretion.

    Notes: Abstract Intentional normovolemic hemodilution was chosen as the model to compare a 6% low molecular weight hydroxyethyl starch (LMW HES) to 4% albumin. The study ran over the plasma exchange period for 24 h. Nine patients, scheduled for abdominal aortic surgery, were included in each group. After basal measurements, blood was withdrawn and simultaneously replaced by either 4% albumin (Group 1) or 6% LMW HES (Group 2) to achieve a final hematocrit of approximately 30%. Hemodynamic blood oxygen gas and hormonal plasma levels were determined before hemodilution then at 30 min, 1, 2, 3, and 24 h after the end of hemodilution. Basal value for total blood volume was 4377±162 ml in group 1 and 4138±315 ml in group 2. As in both groups the decrease in blood cell volume was exactly compensated by the increase in plasma volume, no significant change in total blood volume (respectively 4432±159 and 4305±267 ml) was observed. Throughout the study, in both groups, no significant change in mean arterial and right atrial pressures was observed. In group 2 (LMW HES), a significant increase of pulmonary capillary wedge pressure was noted 120 min after hemodilution. After hemodilution, despite a significant decrease in arterial oxygen O2 content, systemic oxygen transport did not significantly vary until 24 h in relation to the increased cardiac index. An increase in O2 extraction was observed until the 24 h. No significant chagnes either in global O2 consumption or in lactate concentration were detected. Plasma renin activity fell in both groups while atrial natriuretic factor increased with a peak value at the 2 h. These data suggest that LMW HES as well as 4% albumin was able to maintain at least normovolemia during a 24 h period after intentional hemodilution.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Unter Berücksichtigung der neueren Literatur und ihrer persönlichen Erfahrung diskutieren die Autoren die verschiedenen Probleme bei der Herstellung und Benutzung von Trennkapillaren. Sie führen zunächst eine einfache und schnelle Methode an, mit der man die möglichen Gründe für schlechte analytische Ergebnisse feststellen kann; dann diskutieren sie die verschiedenen Faktoren, die die Wahl des Kapillarrohres, die daran vorzunehmende Behandlung und das Verfahren der Belegung mit stationärer Phase beeinflussen können. Sie vergleichen sodann die Vor- und Nachteile der beiden hauptsächlichen Methoden: der statischen und der dynamischen Methode. Schließlich läßt sich mit verschiedenen Tests die Qualität einer Kapillare und der durchgeführten Behandlung bestimmen sowie ihre Fähigkeit, polare oder unpolare Gemische aufzutrennen.
    Abstract: Résumé Les auteurs discutent, à la lumière de la littérature récente et de leur expérience personnelle, les divers problèmes rencontrés dans la préparation des colonnes capillaires et dans leur utilisation. Ils indiquent d'abord une méthode simple et rapide permettant de déterminer l'origine éventuelles de mauvais résultats analytiques puis ils discutent les différents facteurs pouvant influencer le choix du tube capillaire, les traitements à lui faire subir et la méthode de dépôt de la phase stationnaire. Ils comparent ensuite les avantages et les inconvénients des deux principales méthodes: la méthode statique et la méthode dynamique. Enfin, un certain nombre de tests permettent de déterminer la qualité d'une colonne et des traitements effectués, son aptitude à résoudre des mélanges polaires ou non polaires.
    Notes: Summary In the light of recent literature and of their personal experience, the authors discuss the various problems encountered in the preparation of capillary columns and in their use. First of all a simple and rapid method for determining the possible origins of poor analytical results is indicated; then the various factors that may influence the choice of the capillary tube, the treatment to be applied, and the method of depositing the stationary phase are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the two principal coating methods: the static method and the dynamic method are also compared. Finally, a certain number of tests are described by which the quality of a column and of its treatment, as well as its capacity for resolving polar or non-polar mixtures, can be determined.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurde eine Anzahl gepackter Kapillarsäulen hergestellt, die mit Trägermaterial verschiedener Korngrösse gefüllt und mit verschiedenen Phasenverhältnissen versehen wurden. Die Permeabilität dieser Säulen ist zehnmal höher als diejenige von üblichen, mit Trägermaterial gleicher Korngrösse gefüllten Kapillaren; dies ist einer der Gründe für ihre gute Leistung. Es wurden gepackte Trennkapillaren mit sehr hoher Leistung hergestellt, die bis zu 2500 Böden je Meter für n-Heptan bei 50°C aufwiesen (k=2.2) und die einen hohen optimalen Gasvolumenfluß hatten. Mit Hilfe verschiedener Trägergase wurde die Änderung der Höhe eines theoretischen Bodens mit dem Trägergasvolumenfluß bestimmt. Die experimentellen Ergebnisse können nicht mit Hilfe der klassischen Van-Deemter-Gleichung ausgewertet werden (17, 18).
    Abstract: Sommaire On a préparé une série de colonnes capillaires remplies de particules de diamètres variés et imprégnées de différents taux de phase stationnaire. La perméabilité de ces colonnes est dix fois plus grande que celle des colonnes classiques remplies de particules de même diamètre, ce qui est une des raisons de leurs bonnes performances. On a pu préparer des colonnes capillaires remplies ayant une efficacité très élevée, jusqu'à 2500 plateaux par mètre pour le n-hep-tane à 50°C (k′=2,2) et une vitesse optimale élevée. On a déterminé la variation de la hauteur équivalente à un plateau théorique avec la vitesse du gaz vecteur, en utilisant plusieurs gaz vecteurs différents. Les résultats expérimentaux ne peuvent pas être interprétés en utilisant l'équation devan Deemter classique, mais semblent montrer l'existence d'un effet couplé [17, 18].
    Notes: Summary A number of capillary columns were prepared by filling them with supports of different mesh size and coating them with different amounts of stationary phase. The permeability of these columns is ten times higher than that of the conventional packed capillary columns prepared with the same support particles. This explains partly their good performances. The packed capillary columns thus prepared had a very high efficiency, providing up to 2500 plates per meter for n-heptane at 50°C (k=2.2) and a high optimum speed. By using serveral different carrier gases, the variation of the height of a theoretical plate with the carrier gas flow rate was determined. The experimental results cannot be interpreted by means of the classical Van Deemter equation; this is a systematic trend which might be the result of a coupling effect (17, 18).

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Theorien von Giddings und Littlewood über Kopplung der molekularen und der scheinbaren Diffusion bezüglich der Strömung in gefüllten Säulen werden referiert und diskutiert. Eine praktische Methode wird beschrieben, nach der die Werte für die Konstanten in der HETP-Gleichung aus Messungen über die Änderung von H mit us bestimmt werden können. Dem Beitrag der Gaskompression zur Peakverbreiterung wird dabei Rechnung getragen. Diese theoretischen Ansätze werden auf experimentell gewonnene Daten angewendet, die aus einer Studie an verschiedenen gepackten Kapillaren erhalten wurden. Alle Werte der Terme zum Widerstand des Massenübergangs in die flüssige und unbewegte Gas-Phase sowie der Kopplungskonstanten stimmen völlig überein und entsprechen theoretischen Ergebnissen. Man kann deshalb hohes Vertrauen in die Ergebnisse der kinetischen Theorie setzen.
    Abstract: Sommaire Après avoir exposé les théories deGiddings etLittlewood prévoyant un couplage des effets de la diffusion moléculaire et de la diffusion apparente en raison de la structure de l'écoulement dans les colonnes remplies, on expose une méthode pratique permettant de calculer la valeur des constantes figurant dans l'équation donnant la hauteur équivalente à un plateau théorique, tout en tenant compte par les corrections nécessaires de l'effet de la décompression du gaz vecteur sur l'élargissement des pics. Ces résultats théoriques sont appliqués aux données expérimentales rassemblées lors de l'étude d'un certain nombre de colonnes capillaires remplies. L'ensemble des valeurs obtenues pour les termes de résistance aux transferts de masse dans la phase liquide et dans la phase gazeuse immobile et pour la constante de couplage est parfaitement cohérent et en accord avec les diverses estimations théoriques qui en ont été faites. Les résultats de la théorie cinétique de la chromatographie en phase gazeuse peuvent donc être regardés avec beaucoup de confiance car ils permettent de rendre compte avec précision des résultats expérimentaux.
    Notes: Summary The coupling theories byGiddings andLittle-wood are reviewed and discussed. A practical method to derive the values of the constants involved in the plate height equation from experimental determinations of the variation of H vs us, whereas accounting for the contribution of gas decompression to peak broadening is described. These theoretical concepts are applied to the experimental data obtained from a study of various packed capillary columns. It is shown that the whole set of values of the terms of resistance to mass transfer in the liquid and immobile gas phase and of the coupling constant are self-consistent and in agreement with corresponding theoretical results. A large level of confidence can thus be placed in the results of the kinetic theory.
