Summary 1. In consideration of the results of the investigations briefly communicated in this report, the determination of pyruvic acid (PA) in the cerebrospinal fluid may be recommended as a valuable method with regard to differential diagnosis and prognosis, in addition to the other examinations of the cerebrospinal fluid. A strong isolated increase in PA in the cerebrospinal fluid in the case of neurological diseases is an argument in favor of a serious participation of the central nervous system, if an increase in PA in the cerebrospinal fluid based on an increase in PA in the blood serum in consequence of an internal disease may be excluded. 2. Therapeutical experiments on the use of a treatment with ferments (Berolase-Roche) aiming at the reduction of these increases in PA are being undertaken.
