Notes: The surface chemical properties of a GaAs layer grown by molecular beam epitaxy were investigated by photoluminescence (PL) and photoreflectance (PR) measurements. While the intensity of the PL spectra for the sulfur-treated GaAs, using a (NH4)2Sx solution, increased 75 times compared to that for the as-grown GaAs, the peaks for the as-grown GaAs measured by PR vanished after a sulfur treatment. These results indicate that the surface state acting as the nonradiative recombination centers was passivated by the sulfur. The chemical adsorption behavior resulting from the sulfur is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Since the advent of improved telecommunication technology, greater bandwidth capability, medical robotics, and digital video technology, telemedicine has evolved. Telesurgical telementoring is an advanced form of telemedicine. An experienced surgeon can conduct, guide and mentor a second surgeon from a remote location. The historical method of teaching surgeons new operative techniques is exemplified in residency training: having individuals work with experienced teachers. Unfortunately, it is impractical for these specialized minimally invasive surgeons to travel and proctor generally trained surgeons each time a new surgical technique is developed. Telesurgical telementoring may represent a method to teach and mentor remote surgeons, as well as allow educational opportunities.

Notes: Abstract  The nuclease S1 gene (nucS) from Aspergillus oryzae was isolated using a polymerase-chain-reaction-amplified DNA fragment as a probe, and a 2.6-kb SalI-EcoRI fragment containing the nucS gene was sequenced. It was deduced that the nucS gene had two short introns, 49 and 50 nucleotides in length. The nucS gene had an open-reading frame of 963 base pairs and coded for a protein of 287 amino acid residues, comprising the signal peptide of 20 amino acids and a mature protein of 267amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence agreed well with the published amino acid sequence except for one substitution. Southern hybridization analysis showed that the nucS gene existed as a single copy in the A. oryzae chromosome. When the structural gene of nucS was fused with the promoter of the glaA gene and introduced into A. oryzae, the yield of secreted nuclease S1 increased about 100-fold compared with the recipient strain.

Notes: Abstract Background: In order for robotic devices to be introduced successfully into surgical practice, the development of transparent surgeon/machine interfaces is critical. Methods: This study evaluated the standard foot pedal for the AESOP robot compared to a voice control interface. Speed, accuracy, learning curves, durability of learning at 2 weeks, and operator-interface failures were analyzed in an ex vivo model. Results: Foot control was faster and had less operator-interface failures. Voice control was more accurate as measured by ``pass points.'' The foot control learning curve reached a plateau at the third trial, while the voice control did not fully plateau. Durability of learning favored the foot control but was not significantly different. Conclusions: Currently, the voice control is more accurate and has the advantage of not requiring the surgeon to look away from the operative field. However, it is slower and may require more attention as an interface. As voice recognition software continues to advance, speed and transparency are anticipated to improve.

Notes: Summary Two kinds of cellulase genes coding for endo-β-1, 4-glucanase and β-glucosidase, isolated fromBacillus subtilis andAlcaligenes faecalis respectively, were separately or combinedly put on a newly constructedEscherichia coli-Bacillus shuttle vector plasmid. When the recombinant plasmids having cellulase gene(s) were introduced intoE. coli orBacillus cells, drastic differences in fates and expression of the two genes were observed.
