Notes: Abstract Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by a deficiency of porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD). Up to now 14 different mutations have been described. In an effort to investigate the molecular epidemiology of AIP we have undertaken a systematic study of different exons of the PBGD gene from a large number of unrelated patients. Here, exon 8 from 82 unrelated Dutch and French AIP patients was examined using single strand confirmation polymorphism analysis (SSCP) after polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. A single base mutation, C to T, at position 346 of the sequence coding for PBGD was observed in 15 Dutch families but in only 1 French family. A simple PCR assay is described to facilitate the diagnosis of this common mutation at the DNA level.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to assess high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings of exogenous lipoid pneumonia. High-resolution computed tomography was obtained in 25 patients with proven exogenous lipoid pneumonia resulting from aspiration of squalene (derived from shark liver oil). Diagnosis was based on biopsy (n = 9), bronchoalveolar lavage (n = 8), or sputum cytology and clinical findings (n = 8). The clinical history of taking squalene was confirmed in all patients. The CT findings were classified into three patterns: diffuse ground-glass opacity, consolidation, and interstitial abnormalities. Distribution of the abnormalities, duration of taking squalene, predisposing factors for aspiration, and route of administration were analyzed. Ten patients showed diffuse ground-glass opacity pattern. Seven of 10 patients had predisposing conditions such as unconsciousness, pharyngeal dysmotility, or motor disturbances, and 6 patients had a recent history of taking large amount of squalene through nasal route. Seven patients who had consolidation pattern had a history of taking squalene for several months and did not have any predisposing factor. All of the 5 patients who had a pattern of interstitial abnormalities had a history of taking squalene longer than 1 year and showed segmental distribution of interstitial thickening with interposing ground-glass opacities. Three patients simultaneously had two different patterns at different lobes of the lung. The HRCT findings of lipoid pneumonia are ground-glass opacities, consolidation, and interstitial abnormalities. These HRCT findings with appropriate inquiries could be useful for diagnosis of exogeneous lipoid pneumonia.

Notes: Summary We have investigated changes in the pharmacokinetics of prednisolone caused by co-administration or discontinuation of rifampin. Serial IV pharmacokinetic studies of prednisolone (1 mg/kg) in groups of 3 patients over a 1 month period of rifampin co-treatment or after its withdrawal, revealed significant changes in the area under the curve, the total clearance, the non-renal clearance and the half-life. The changes in the pharmacokinetic parameters reached a 1.5 to 2-fold plateau after 2 weeks and the half maximal effect was attained within 5 days. Neither the volume of distribution nor the protein binding of prednisolone were significantly altered.

Notes: This study presents a new approach that can stabilize effectively l-ascorbic acid in water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) double emulsions. Basically, the behavior of l-ascorbic acid in the aqueous phase was observed, considering its molecular deformation. Then, it was found that the stability determined in the aqueous phase by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed that the collapse of ionization of l-ascorbic acid played a crucial role in protecting the molecular deformation. Then, the stable aqueous system was incorporated into the internal aqueous phase of the double emulsions. From the PLC analysis, it was observed that the l-ascorbic acid in an appropriate system showed high molecular stability for a long time. Moreover, in the measurement of in vitro skin permeation, the l-ascorbic acid stabilized in this study showed considerable skin permeation ability, indicating its potential applicability in pharmaceutics and cosmetics.

Notes: A fit to a recent ab initio potential surface for HeHHe+ is presented and discussed. Calculations of the rotation–vibration spectra are made using the variation method with this potential surface. The calculations are carried out for both the 1H and 2H(D) isotope of H and comparisons of the spectra and vibrationally averaged bond length are discussed for the two species. A study of the dissociation to He+HeH+ is made and "vibrational bonding'' is investigated. It is found that this system is not vibrationally bound. The deuterium substituted species is more strongly bound.

Notes: The amorphous state of ferromagnetic Fe83B9Nb7Cu1 and its nanocrystallization have been studied by x-ray, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic moment measurements. In the amorphous state at 13 K, the Mössbauer spectrum exhibits an essentially symmetric hyperfine field distribution with a half-width of 72 kOe. The average hyperfine field Hhf(T) of the amorphous state shows a temperature dependence of [Hhf(T)−Hhf(O)]/Hhf(O)=−0.48(T/TC)3/2 u −0.22(T/TC)5/2 for T/TC〈0.7, indicative of spin-wave excitation. The quadrupole splitting just above the Curie temperature TC is 0.43 mm/s, whereas the average quadrupole shift below TC is zero. The Curie and crystallization temperatures are determined to be TC=393 K and Tx=775 K, respectively, for a heating rate of 5 K/min. The occupied area of the nanocrystalline phase at the optimum annealing temperature is about 33%–71%. It is notable that the magnetization of the amorphous phase decreases more rapidly with reduced temperature than those of nanocrystalline ferromagnets, suggesting the presence of the distribution of exchange interactions in the amorphous phase or high metalloid contents. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A finite-element formulation for the calculation of three-dimensional (3D) transient eddy currents in nonferrous conductors is presented in this paper. In an attempt to develop a simple yet robust finite-element formulation, the magnetic field intensity H is directly chosen as the state variable. Unlike the "curl–curl'' formulation, this formulation is based on the vector diffusion equation and the divergence free condition is enforced by the penalty method. Finite-element implementation of the formulation is described in some detail. The proposed direct field formulation is simple to implement and computationally economical. An illustrative numerical example is also presented.
