    Notes: Aliphatic polybenzoxazoles, polybenzothiazoles, and polybenzimidazoles have been prepared by three methods: in poly(phosphoric acid), by the polyamide precursor, and by melt polymerization. The melt polymerization method was found to be the most satisfactory. All of the aliphatic heterocyclic polymers had excellent thermal stability, resistance to alkaline hydrolysis, high glass transition temperatures, and a high degree of flexibility. The only class of polymer found having any degree of solubility, however, was the polybenzimidazoles. Aliphatic polybenzimidazole films were prepared by solution casting. These films were found to be extremely flexible at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. The films were unaffected by alkaline hydrolysis, even in an oxidizing medium. A molding prepared from the aliphatic polybenzimidazole had excellent physical properties at both cryogenic and room temperature.

    Notes: (1) The prognosis for adhesives uieful up to an hour at 1000°F., in air, is good. (2) Organic adhesives based on phenolic and silicone-phenolic resins are more capable than expected of usefulness at 1000°F. (3) Preparation of semiinorganic adhesives by reaction of heat stable organic polymers with inorganic reagents is feasible. (4) The prospect appears excellent for the achievement of adhesives to be used for 1000 hr. at 500°F., in air, on steel. (5) Despite research on 2000°F. adhesives, effort is still urgently needed on materials for use at lower temperatures. (6) Perhaps the area with the most serious shortage of information and research is the development and testing of adhesives for use at 180-500°F. for periods of three to five years. Both military and civilian agencies are planning the construction of supersonic transports which need such structural adhesives.

    Notes: Polybenzimidazoles were prepared in poly(phosphoric acid) from isophthalic, m- and p-phenylene diacetic, succinic, adipic, suberic, and sebacic acids and 3,3′-diaminobenzidine, 3,3′,4,4′-tetraaminodiphenyl ether and 3,3′,4,4′-tetraaminodiphenylmethane. The thermal, mechanical, and bonding properties were studied. A 3:1 copolymer of isophthalic and m-phenylenediacetic acid with 3,3′-diaminobenzidine showed the best results as far as isothermal oxidation resistance and thermal and processing characteristics.

    Notes: When initially evaluated as potential membrance separators for a heat-sterilizable silver-zinc battery, aliphatic polybenzimidazoles (PBI) proved to be unsatisfactory because of their excessively high resistivity. Later, various polymer modifications such as sulfonation, N-hydroxyethylation, N-cyanoethylation, and N-carboxyethylation were made in an attempt to increase the hydrophilicity of the PBI's. As a result of these efforts, an N-carboxyethylated, suberic acid-based PBI shows promise as a sterilizable battery separator material.

    Notes: Completely aromatic polybenzothiazoles possessing superior oxidative and thermal stability have been prepared from aromatic bis(o-mercaptoamines) and aromatic dicarboxylic acids and benzothiazole forming derivatives thereof. The condensations were performed in N,N-diethylaniline and polyphosphoric acid. The former solvent gave meltable, low molecular weight prepolymers which were advanced to high molecular weight polybenzothiazoles by heating in the solid state. The course of the reaction was follwed by removing samples periodically and determining the polymer melt temperature, inherent viscosity, specific extinction coefficient and observing changes in the infrared spectrum. In polyphosphoric acid, relatively high molecular weight polybenzothiazoles were obtained after a short reaction period. The polybenzothiazoles exhibited average TGA weight losses of 6% to 600°C. in static air. The maximum glass transition temperature obtained for poly-2,2′-(m-phenylene)-6,6′-bibenzothiazole was 910°C. Most of the polybenzothiazoles were soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid and 0.3% solutions exhibited inherent viscosities as high as 1.51.

    Notes: Poly-2,2′-(m-phenylene)-5,5′-bibenzimidazole forms, via two or three intermediates, when 3,3′-diaminobenzidine and diphenyl isophthalate are condensed. Kinetic data indicate rapid consumption of 3,3′-diaminobenzidine to form an aldol type intermediate which evolves water to form a Schiff base which in turn evolves phenol to form the final polymer. Phenol evolution is the rate-determining step. The postulated Schiff base can possess stereoisomerism. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding which can occur in the syn-isomer offers an explanation why the condensation affords a linear polymer. The combined effects of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and added resonance stabilization in the Schiff base are possible reasons why phenol evolution is the rate-determining step and why the condensation requires high reaction temperatures.
