    Notizen: The dielectric response of a random mixture of coated cylinders, of nonlinear cores and linear shells, is studied. It is shown that under conditions of partial resonance the system behaves as a mixture of nonlinear solid cylinders of radii equal to, or larger than, these of the original coated cylinders. The electric field in those effective cylinders is larger than that obtained in a mixture of the equivalent solid cylinders. These two effects facilitate the emergence of an enhanced nonlinear response in a composite containing very small quantities of nonlinear material. Also examined is the phenomenon of intrinsic optical bistability when the core component has quadratic or cubic nonlinearity. It is shown that bistability can, in principle, be achieved even when not in the close vicinity of a sharp plasmon resonance, as is the case for nonpartially resonant systems; however, the threshold intensities required for bistable behavior are much higher than in some three-component microgeometries previously discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The bulk effective dielectric function of metal-dielectric composites has a series of poles in the vicinity of which it is extremely sensitive to small changes in the properties of the components. It is possible to induce such a change in the nonlinear component of a composite, containing at least one nonlinear component, by applying an external electric field at a similar frequency. This causes a tuning of the effective dielectric function and a continuous alteration of the optical properties of the medium. We propose a general framework for calculating this effect in two component composites and also calculate it in a few three component microgeometries. It is found that the optical transmittance of a thin film of this kind can be changed from zero up to 80% using moderate electric fields.

    Notizen: We study the thermoelectric properties of a composite medium. Various approximations are developed for calculating the matrix Qˆe of the bulk effective transport coefficients of the medium, including exact upper and lower bounds for Qˆe under various conditions. Results are especially detailed for two-component composites, where a field decoupling transformation is used to reduce the thermoelectric problem to two uncoupled quasi-conductivity problems. Exact bounds are then obtained for the absolute thermopower αe and the thermoelectric figure of merit Ze in two-component composites. We prove that Ze of the composite can never exceed the largest value of Z in any component. Some of these results are extended to certain classes of multicomponent composites.

    Notizen: Abstract We present a series expansion calculation of the bulk effective coefficient of weakly nonlinear behavior in some continuum composite conductors and in simple cubic random resistor networks. The expansion is in powers of the relative difference between the linear Ohmic conductivities of the components. It is carried up to third order for an independent random bond network and a diagrammatic scheme is used to aid in implementing the calculation. For continuum composites, only the first term of the expansion can be calculated explicitly without detailed information about the microgeometry. Such information is difficult to acquire and even more difficult to exploit.

    Notizen: Abstract Keller, Dykhne, and others have exploited duality to derive exact results for the effective behavior of two-dimensional Ohmic composites. This paper addresses similar issues in the non-Ohmic context. We focus primarily on three different types of nonlinearity: (a) the weakly nonlinear regime; (b) power-law behavior; and (c) dielectric breakdown. We first make the consequences of duality explicit in each setting. Then we draw conclusions concerning the critical exponents and scaling functions of “dual pairs” of random non-Ohmic composites near a percolation threshold. These results generalize, unify, and simplify relations previously derived for nonlinear resistor networks. We also discuss some self-dual nonlinear composites. Our treatment is elementary and self-contained; however, we also link it with the more abstract mathematical discussions of duality by Jikov and Kozlov.
