Notes: Abstract The measurement of the c-axis resistivity of single crystalline La1.86Sr0.14CuO4 is performed at different constant temperatures as a function of magnetic field H and angle θ between H and the ab-plane. It is shown that the 2D- or 3D-scaling rule proposed for high-T c superconductors does not work well for the present system. Taking into account unusual vortex dynamics in the high-T c systems, an extension is made to the 3D-scaling rule developed on the basis of the effective-mass model. Based on this extended rule, it is shown that at each given temperature the observed resistivity as a function of H and θ could be consistently scaled onto the corresponding Lorentz-force-free magnetoresistivity curves directly measured in H‖I‖c.

Notes: The structural distortions arising from the condensations of two essential kinds of phonon modes: the triply degenerated rotational modes (cursive-phix,cursive-phiy,cursive-phiz) of MnO6 and the doubly degenerated Jahn–Teller (JT) active modes (Q1,Q2), have been systematically investigated in the perovskite manganites. The microstructure features of several typical structural phases have been characterized by transmission-electron microscopy investigations. Due to the strong coupling among crystal lattice, carriers, and spins, the condensations of the rotational modes evidently impact the fundamental behaviors of the low-temperature JT polarization and magnetic orders. In the A-type antiferromagnetic Pr(Sr)MnO3 and Nd(Sr)MnO3 materials, the properties of charge-ordering transitions and structural distortions have been extensively investigated. Several typical kinds of defect structures, including the antiphase boundaries and the 90°-twin domains in the charge-order states, have been analyzed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The c-axis magnetoresistivity as a function of temperature T and field H for fields parallel to the c axis is experimentally investigated for single-crystalline (La1−xSrx)2CuO4 (x=0.068). It is argued that the observed Lorentz force free magnetoresistive phenomena cannot be accounted for by previously considered mechanisms. By contrast, they can be explained by the extended Josephson coupling model, which takes into account both effective thermal energy and anisotropy. Based on this extended model, it is shown that all the magnetoresistivity curves obtained in H//I//c at various constant temperatures could be nicely scaled onto a single curve without any adjustable parameter in a wide transition region.

Notes: 1 Although monumental efforts have been made to define the action sites of cough, the importance of neurotransmitter systems in the cough reflex has received limited attention. We studied the roles for four major neurotransmitters [acetylcholine, histamine, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) and dopamine] in the modulation of the cough reflex. 2 Atropine (muscarinic cholinergic blocking agent), pyrilamine maleate (PM, histamine H1 blocker), cimetidine (histamine H2 blocker), 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)-tetralin (8-OH-DPAT, specific 5-HT1A receptor agonist) and SCH-23390 (selective dopamine D1 receptor antagonist) were examined on the cough response to inhaled capsaicin in conscious guinea-pigs. 3 All the drugs significantly decreased the number of capsaicin-induced coughs in a dose-dependent manner. To compare the sensitivity of these drugs on cough response, we calculated the effective doses for 50% inhibition of cough (ED50) when the animals were exposed to 3 × 10−4 m capsaicin. The ED50 values were 0.03 μm kg−1 for atropine, 0.2 μm kg−1 for 8-OH-DPAT, 6.2 μm kg−1 for SCH-23390, 8.5 μm kg−1 for PM and 13.9 μm kg−1 for cimetidine. 4 These findings indicated that all these four neurotransmitters may be involved in the regulation of the cough reflex. Multiple changes of these neurotransmitters in disorders of the central nervous system might synergically affect the cough reflex.

Notes: We have investigated the structure of V-Sr-Tl-O system with transmission electron microscopy. The majority phase in VSrTl0.2Oy samples with a sharp resistivity drop around 165 K is identified as V2Sr0.6TlδOy with δ ranging from 0.01 to 0.04. This phase has a hexagonal structure, with point group 6/mmm, space group P6/mmm, and lattice parameters a=0.569 nm and c=1.284 nm. Upon in situ cooling from room temperature to 130 K, no evidence of structure change is observed. When the crystals of V2Sr0.6TlδOy are heated in situ, two superstructures are formed.

Notes: The generation rates and annealing behavior of the irradiation defects in n- and p-type hydrogen-grown float-zoned silicon (irradiated with γ rays from 60Co) have been studied by the deep-level transient spectroscopy technique and compared with those of irradiated argon-grown float-zoned silicon. Assuming the generation rate of the irradiation defects created by γ rays in argon-grown float-zoned silicon is 1, then the generation rates of the A center, divacancy, and phosphorus vacancy in n-type hydrogen-grown float-zoned silicon are 0.23, 0.78, and 0.19, respectively, while the generation rates of the divacancy and H(0.37 eV) in p-type hydrogen-grown silicon are 0.79 and 0.10, respectively. Due to the existence of hydrogen, the generation rate reduction of the major irradiation defects in γ-ray irradiated silicon is more pronounced than that in 1-MeV electron irradiated silicon. Three hydrogen-related defects, H(0.10 eV), H(0.29 eV), and H(0.56 eV), were seen in γ-ray irradiated hydrogen-grown float-zoned silicon, among which H(0.10 eV) and H(0.56 eV) were reported by us to exist in electron irradiated hydrogen-grown float-zoned silicon, while H(0.29 eV) is reported for the first time. The convergence effect of annealing temperatures for the irradiation defects was observed. That is, the annealing temperatures at which the irradiation defects diminish are almost the same for most irradiation defects, similar to that in the case of electron irradiation, was observed, showing that this effect is characteristic of the hydrogen behavior in silicon, and irrelevent to the type of irradiation.

Notes: A kinetic analysis of ion temperature gradient modes with the trapped ion bounce resonance in tokamaks is presented under the long-wavelength limit. The dispersion relations of the toroidal and slab branches are derived by employing two-scale expansion, and their eigenfunctions are obtained analytically. The growth rates and stability thresholds of the more unstable toroidal and slab ion modes are evaluated in the cases with and without trapped electron dynamics. It is found that the minority trapped ion bounce resonances possess approximately the same effects on the toroidal and slab ion modes as the majority ion transit resonances. The nonadiabatic trapped electron dynamics does also strongly affect the toroidal ion mode while it affects the slab branch, the trapped electrons have a destabilizing effect on these ion modes. In addition, the effects of trapped electron temperature gradient on the trapped ion temperature gradient modes are considered. For high collisionality, the trapped electron temperature gradient destabilizes toroidal and slab ion modes. On the contrary, it plays a role of stabilizing to the toroidal and slab ion modes in the case of very low collisionality. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The microstructural features of the powder C60 material have been studied by using scanning microscopy, electron diffraction, and high resolution electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy observation reveals that the grains in the samples are packed by extensively disordered crystallites as well as amorphous granules. Electron diffraction measurements have identified that the crystals of C60 have two kinds of structure, one is face-centered-cubic (fcc) with unit cell parameter a=1.41 nm, and the other has the hexagonal closest packed (hcp) structure with cell parameters a=0.958 nm and c=1.63 nm. High resolution electron microscopy as well as electron diffraction observations clearly show the random crystallites packing in the C60 grains.
