    Notes: The aim was to mimic the repeated open application test (ROAT) procedure, well established in humans, in an animal model. Guinea pigs were induced with cobalt chloride (CoCl2). They were then challenged by repeated open application (4 sites/animal) of various concentrations of the allergen in 10% DMSO 1 × a day for 7 days, to study dose dependency, morphology of test reactions and time course. The reactivity at the test sites to repeated open application was dose-and time-dependent. There was good agreement between the results of the treatments with CoCl2 and the post-treatment patch test results. Among 26 of the 29 animals, such agreement was found when 10% DMSO was used as vehicle. However, some reactivity was also observed in pretests at sites exposed to petrolatum. We suspect that this may be due to contamination and/or irritancy of the vehicle.

    Notes: A new technique for finishing anodized aluminium was introduced during the 1980s – cold impregnation with nickel. Nickel is available on the surface of cold-impregnated aluminium, as shown by the dimethylglyoxime test. Chemical analysis with EDXA showed that nickel was in the form of NiSO4. A case of work-related allergic contact dermatitis in an engraver with nickel allergy is reported. It transpired that the patient was exposed to nickel in connection with aluminium. It is concluded that cold-impregnated aluminium is a new source of nickel exposure, probably previously unknown to dermatologists.

    Notes: The occurrence and causes of occupational dermatoses at a film laboratory following modernization was studied. In 1983 the film laboratory moved to new premises built to reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals. The study was carried out during 1983-1986 with repeated interviews and dermatological examinations of all employees (78 subjects) and patch testing those with a history of or with current chemical exposure or dermatitis (65 subjects). Of 54 chemically exposed subjects, 34 (63%) had a history of occupational dermatoses, and 12 (22%) were contact allergic to film chemicals. Current, probable occupational dermatoses were observed in 13 subjects - thereof 8 with hand eczema. No new case of occupational skin disease occurred during the investigation period, except for 1 case of ulceration from an acid splash. Petrolatum mixtures of the colour developing agents, Metol and hydroquinone were found most suitable for patch testing, since these chemicals are unstable and/or cause irritation in aqueous solutions. It is concluded that occurrence and severity of occupational dermatoses had been reduced by the technical measures taken to reduce chemical exposure.

    Notes: A multicentre, randomized, double-blind, crossover study was designed to investigate the effects of prednisone on allergic and irritant patch test reactions. 24 subjects with known allergy to nickel were recruited and patch tested with a nickel sulfate dilution series in aqueous solution, 5% nickel sulfate in petrolatum and 2 dilution series of the irritants nonanoic acid and sodium lauryl sulfate. The subjects were tested ×2, both during treatment with prednisone 20 mg oral daily and during placebo treatment. The total number of positive nickel patch test reactions decreased significantly in patients during prednisone treatment. The threshold concentration to elicit a patch test reaction increased and the overall degree of reactivity to nickel sulfate shifted towards weaker reactions. The effect of prednisone treatment on the response to irritants was divergent with both increased and decreased numbers of reactions, although there were no statistically significant differences compared with placebo. It is concluded that oral treatment with prednisone suppresses patch test reactivity to nickel, but not to the irritants tested.

    Notes: Legislation can be a useful tool in the prevention of contact dermatitis. This is particularly true for dermatitis due to exposure to the many contact allergens that are chemical substances in products. A brief review is given of the most important European legislation – the EU Nickel Directive, the Cosmetics Directive, the Hazardous Substances Directive and the Hazardous Preparations Directive – and of some national regulations and standardization projects. It is concluded that it is essential that experts on contact dermatitis support, with their expert knowledge, national and European authorities.

    Notes: Nickel allergy is by far the most frequent contact allergy, affecting 10–15% of women in the general population, and causing dermatitis and hand eczema. The EU Nickel Directive, aimed at the prevention of nickel allergy, comes fully into force by July 2001. The Directive covers piercing materials, items in contact with the skin, and requirements on resistance to wear. We carried out a study of the prevalence on the market, before the Nickel Directive, of items that release nickel and of nickel in piercing posts. Nickel release, as shown by a positive dimethylglyoxime (DMG) test, was detected in 25% of 725 items intended for direct and prolonged contact with the skin. Of 15 posts intended for use during epithelialization after piercing, 60% contained more than 0.05% nickel. These products do not comply with the requirements of the EU Nickel Directive. It is suggested that experts in contact dermatitis participate in the prevention of nickel allergy by explaining its effects: the rôle of skin exposure and which parts of an item are in contact with the skin, and the crucial question of nickel release versus nickel content.

    Notes: The fungicide chlorothalonil is used extensively under several tradenames for the protection of various horticultural and fruit crops and bananas against fungal infections. It is also used as fungicide in wood preservation and as a preservative in paints. Clinical experience has shown chlorothalonil to be a contact allergen and several cases of allergic contact dermatitis attributed to chlorothalonil have been described. 2 previous guinea pig maximization test studies have shown the sensitizing potential of chlorothalonil to be high. The sensitizing property of chlorothalonil was studied by us with the predictive test methods the local lymph node assay and the cumulative contact enhancement test. In the local lymph node assay, chlorothalonil induced a dose-dependent increase in proliferation with a maximal stimulation index of 19.2 and 27.2. In the cumulative contact enhancement test, a statistically significant dose-dependent high sensitization rate was seen with a maximal sensitization rate of 100%. In conclusion, it is evident that chlorothalonil is an extremely potent contact allergen, inducing sensitization using only topical exposure on intact skin.

    Notes: Metal release from 13 different gold-containing jewellery alloys stored for 1 and 3 weeks in artificial sweat was analysed. For chemical analysis, inductively-coupled plasma detection (ICP) and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AA), with flame and with furnace, were used. No release of gold was detected. It is unlikely that skin contact with gold-containing metallic items such as jewellery is responsible for inducing contact allergy to gold or allergic contact dermatitis due to the gold. The patch-test reactivity to gold sodium thiosulfate needs to be explained by some other mechanism(s).
