    Notes: Abstract On the basis of clinical observations, some periodontologists have suggested an association between psychosocial factors such as depression, stress and anxiety, and adult onset rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP). This study investigated more formally possible associations between a number of relevant psychosocial factors and RPP The significance of the psychosocial variables was assessed by comparing 3 groups: 50 patients with RPP, 50 patients with routine chronic adult periodontitis (RCAP). and 50 patients without significant periodontal destruction (controls). It was anticipated that the RPP group would show higher levels of psychosocial maladjustment than the RCAP and control groups. A between-subjects multivariate analysis of covariance indicated that the combined psychosocial variables were significantly related to the periodontal diagnosis. 2 psychosocial factors, depression and loneliness, were significant in distinguishing between groups. The RPP group presented significantly increased depression and loneliness compared to the RCAP and control groups. Future research is indicated to further clarify the significance of these psychosocial differences in relation to the onset and progression of RPP.

    Notes: Abstract Classical nova outbursts occur in binary systems containing a white dwarf accretor and a Roche-lobe-filling main-sequence star. The outburst is due to a thermonuclear runaway in the accreted material on the surface of the white dwarf, and results in the ejection of up to 10−4 M ⊙of material at velocities of several hundred to a few thousand kilometres per second. There is now strong evidence that the mass ejection takes place via a wind with secularly increasing velocity. The fast ejecta catches up with slower moving material ejected earlier in the outburst, forming a layer of shock-heated gas which gives rise to a short burst of soft X-ray emission. This emission was observed in V838 Her (Nova Herculis 1991), and was succesfully accounted for by the ‘interacting winds’ model. In this paper, we present 2.5-D numerical hydrodynamics calculations of interacting winds in novae which consider the effects of the binary system on shaping the mass-loss, and show that many of the features seen in the optical shells of novae many years after outburst can be accounted for.

    Notes: Abstract We present MERLIN images of the symbiotic system R Aquarii obtained at 1.7 and 5 GHz. We identify the emission from the binary system and derive a mass loss rate for the Mira that is commensurate with that in typical Miras. We show that variations in the radio emission over the last decade are consistent with the jet model for the system originally presented by Solf (1992). In addition, we calculate the spectral index distribution and find that there is no evidence of non-thermal emission.

    Notes: Abstract Bipolarity is a common feature in the outbursts of classical, recurrent and symbiotic novae. In this paper, we present the results of numerical calculations of bipolar explosions in which two parcels of gas are ejected at highly supersonic and oppositely directed velocities into a cold surrounding medium. The calculations demonstrate the formation of a dense ring of shocked material in the plane normal to the line of ejection, due to the interaction of two bowshocks. Observational candidates for this hydrodynamic phenomenon are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We present a simple model for interactions between the slow and fast phases of mass ejection in classical nova outbursts. A situation develops in which a layer of hot gas sandwiched between two shocks progresses through the slow wind until it ‘blows-out’, expanding and cooling adiabatically. We calculate the X-ray emission from this model and find that the dynamical timescale is at least as important as the radiative cooling time in determining the form of the X-ray light curves. Models of this type may help to explain the origin of X-ray emission in some classical nova outbursts.
