Notes: Abstract Both combinations of antibacterials drugs, framycetin with chloramphenicol on one hand and gentamicin with flucloxacillin on the other hand, have proven to be helpfull in the treatment of severe post-traumatic infections and for the prevention of infections in perforating injuries of the eyes. Generally speaking we prefer the framycetin-chloramphenicol combination in cases of eye perforation in which the all-over trauma to the eye is limited and for the gentamicin-flucloxacillin combination in cases of severe perforating trauma and infection, and in those cases in which the adnexa are traumatised and infected as well.

Notes: Abstract The primary aim of the investigation was to formulate a stable sodium nitroprusside (Np) injection. However, during the investigation a number of inexplicable phenomena were observed, which led us to examine some degradation processes. Reproducible determination of the concentration OfNp, aquopentacyanoferrate (Apcf) (II) and (III), iron-cyanide or cyanide in degraded solutions appeared to be impossible. For this reason we used the absorbance ratio, ΔE, at 394 nm, the ratio E394/E440 and the resultant colours to study decomposition. The absorbance at 394 nm increases upon controlled irradiation and is accelerated by irradiation of light of greater intensity. This again is accompanied by a relatively rapid decrease in pH value. The addition of citrate, phosphate and edetate does not produce a significant difference of ΔE. Changes were observed in the ratio E394/E440 and resultant colours. These differences are probably due to chelate formation or iron ions, which delay the formation of Prussian blue, or produce other modifications of Prussian blue, or retard the conversion ofApcf (II) IntoApcf (III. The influence of irradiation appears to be dependent upon the concentration ofNp. IfNp solutions are stored protected from light, no changes are detected in either the spectra or the colour. The longer TheNp solution is irradiated, the more changes occur after storage in the dark. This means that in the presence of degradation products, reaction of these products can continue. Autoclaving of aNp solution for long periods results in a change of spectrum and the pH value. Addition of 0.05% citric acid has a favourable effect on these changes. Sterilisation by autoclaving at 120°C for a 20 minute period is justifiable with the addition of citric acid, provided that the solution is prepared under exclusion of light and air. To obtain an impression of the way in WhichNp degrades, the individual reaction products were also irradiated in the presence and absence of additives. From these results a degradation scheme ofNp upon irradiation was produced.

Notes: Abstract In both blepharitis squamosa and ulcerosa removal of the crusts and defattening of the lidmargin, by rubbing with light petroleum and carbon tetrachloride solution, is the first step in treatment. Concomitant staphylococcal infection should be treated with antibiotherapy. Empirically this can be best done with oxytetracycline as in Terracortril® suspension. Probably the reason oxytetracyclines work best, is that they also reduce the secretion of meibomian glands. The steroid treatment is necessary to reduce tylosis of the lidmargins. In blepharitis squamosa maintenance therapy consists of application of antiseborrhoic agents in a non-irritating base.

Notes: Abstract The waterloading test in rabbits, using 100 ml of waterloads per kg body weight, without general anaesthesia and with applanation tonometry to measure intraocular pressure (IOP), deserves a place in glaucoma research. Using this model we found adrenaline not to have an effect on the IOP with or without waterloading. Isoprenaline and to a lesser degree physostigmine reduced the pressure in the normal eye markedly, but these drugs did not have any effect on the pressure after waterloading. Δ9-THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and pilocarpine increased the IOP in the normal rabbit eye. After waterloading Δ9-THC decreased the pressure, but its value was still significantly higher than the control pressure. Pilocarpine did not reduce the pressure after water-loading. Acetazolamide and timolol did not reduce the pressure in the normal eye, but after waterloading a significant reduction was observed.

Notes: Abstract The effect of various amounts of waterload and the differences caused by oral and parenteral administration of fluids on the intraocular pressure (IOP), pupildiameter and bloodosmolality were investigated. Trained rabbits were given loadings of fluids by different routes. An oral waterload of 100 ml/kg body weight gave an elevation of the IOP of about 12 mm Hg. Smaller amounts give a less pronounced IOP elevation. Intraperitoneal administration does not seem to increase IOP markedly. Rapid infusion of glucose 5% 15 ml/kg produces a transient and modest increase of the IOP. The mechanisms by which oral waterloading increases the IOP are discussed.
