    Notes: In this article we report the study of the first overtone of fluorobenzene (C6H5F) in the wave number range from about 5900 to 6100 cm−1. The absorption spectrum has been measured with both a low-temperature opto-acoustic cell and a supersonic-beam opto-thermal spectrometer. A theoretical description of the observed, high-resolution spectrum is given in the framework of the one-dimensional algebraic model, inclusive of a complete set of Fermi (anharmonic) interactions. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This work is part of a series aimed to investigate the fundamental and overtone transitions of the CH stretching modes in partially F-substituted benzenes. In this article we report the study of the fundamental transitions of fluorobenzene (C6H5F) in the wave numbers range from about 3000 to 3150 cm−1. The absorption spectrum has been measured through both a low-temperature opto-acoustic cell and a supersonic-beam opto-thermal spectrometer. The opto-thermal spectrometer enabled us to measure the detailed vibrational structure, providing the basis for an algebraic analysis of the fundamental CH transitions. We show, in particular, how benzene algebraic procedures must be modified for taking into account the effects induced by the substitution of one hydrogen atom with fluorine, i.e., (i) the reduction of symmetry and (ii) the frequency (chemical) shift due to the change of electron distribution. Moreover we include the contribution of anharmonic resonances between unperturbed CH stretching modes and overtone or combination bands of lower energy molecular vibrations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Vibrational overtone excitation of jet-cooled methanol, in combination with infrared laser assisted photofragment spectroscopy (IRLAPS) detection, reveals OH stretch bands that are significantly simplified with respect to room-temperature spectra. The simplification afforded by jet-cooling permits the observation of spectral splitting on the order of 50 cm−1 in the region of the 5ν1 OH stretch overtone band. Tracking this splitting as a function of OH stretch vibrational level in combination with isotopic substitution studies allows us to identify the perturbing state as the combination level involving four quanta of OH stretch and one quantum of CH asymmetric stretch, 4ν1+ν2. Careful examination of the spectra reveals that this strong interaction arises from a fourth-order anharmonic term in the Hamiltonian that couples the OH and CH ends of the molecule. These frequency domain results indicate that subsequent to coherent excitation of the 5ν1 band, methanol would undergo energy redistribution to the methyl part of the molecule on a time scale of ∼130 fs. This work also suggests that similar strong resonances may occur more generally in molecules that possess two different high-frequency oscillators in close proximity. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this observational study was to assess the rates of aggressive and violent behavior in patients admitted to an Italian emergency psychiatric unit and to explore possible risk factors for patient violence. In a population of 313 consecutive patients, we considered aggressive or violent behavior, rated according to a hierarchy from no aggressive behavior to serious physical violence. The results confirm that young age, psychotic symptoms, excitement, akathisia, and diagnosis of personality disorder are risk factors for violent behavior. The unique and major finding of the study is the low prevalence of aggressive and violent acts in this sample of patients, possibly related to their cultural background and to the system of psychiatric care. These data provide supportive evidence for the importance of sociocultural factors in the behavior of psychiatric patients and suggest the need to explore new strategies of prevention and treatment of patient aggression and violence. A non-restraint policy could be a critical factor in reducing violence among psychiatric inpatients.
