Summary TheDebye-Bueche theory for the intrinsic viscosity of spheres in solutions is generalized to molecules which have the shape of rotary ellipsoids. As chain molecules in solution have this shape, one can describe with the generalized theory the intrinsic viscosity of a solution of chain molecules. Forθ-solutions the generalized theory gives the same result as the theories ofKirkwood, Riseman andPtitsyn, Ejzner. For all solutions in theDebye Bueche theory a very simple assumption was made for the amount of shielding of the liquid flow and we have also quantitatively the same result as in thePtitsyn-Ejzner theory. The chainend-end distances obtained by intrinsic viscosity measurements are compared with those from light scattering measurements.
Notes:
