Notes: A multicusp source for positive ion beams has been designed and constructed in collaboration with the Ion Beam Technology Department of LBNL for the TRIUMF ISAC project. This type of source has demonstrated a high yield of singly charged ions, a low energy spread, a good emittance, and is compact and simple. Several stages of tests and measurements using nonradioactive beams to characterize the source performance are being carried out both at LBNL and at TRIUMF prior to the final phase of radioactive target-source system tests. Results of these nonradioactive tests and certain problems encountered are reported and discussed in this article. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A prototype surface ionization source coupled with a fixed-geometry extraction electrode system was commissioned on the Isotope Separator Accelerator (ISAC) ion source test stand at TRIUMF. The suitability of the ion source and extraction system for use in the ISAC facility was determined by a series of emittance measurements of the extracted beams. The test stand optics were successfully commissioned using the prototype ion source; emittance measurements of the mass-separated beams demonstrated that second- and third-order beam aberrations (introduced by the magnetic dipole mass separation) could be corrected by the use of multipole electrostatic optics elements. An upper limit of the root-mean-square-energy spread (2 eV) was deduced from the emittance measurements. Emittance measurements were performed at beam energies of 10–50 keV, as well as for ion masses ranging from Li+ to Rb+, to demonstrate the feasibility of the prototype for a variety of beam energies and masses. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The fetal crown-rump length (CRL) was measured by means of pulsed ultrasound, and the normal values between 47 and 101 days from the onset of the last menstrual period were determined from cross-sectional data in 253 patients. For any given CRL, the range was found to be within three days of the menstrual age with a maximum variation for a given occasion of three days. Detailed statistical analysis showed that the acceleration in the rate of change in the CRL was a constant and that the intrapatient variability, where measured, was low. A close correlation between the measurement and the date of ovulation was demonstrated in a further 40 patients.

Notes: Chronic treatment with l-DOPA induces dyskinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated monkeys, but is not thought to do so in normal humans or primates. However, we have shown that chronic oral high dose l-DOPA administration, with the peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor, carbidopa and with or without the peripherally acting catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) inhibitor, entacapone, to normal macaque monkeys for 13 weeks induced dyskinesia in a proportion of animals. In the present study, in situ hybridization histochemistry was used to investigate the effect of chronic l-DOPA administration on the activity of the direct and indirect striatal output pathways by measuring striatal preprotachykinin (PPT), preproenkephalin-A (PPE-A) and adenosine-2a (A2a) receptor gene expression in these monkeys. Overall there was no significant difference in striatal PPT, PPE-A and A2a receptor mRNA levels between normal animals and all l-DOPA (plus carbidopa and/or entacapone)-treated animals irrespective of whether or not dyskinesia occurred. However, when the level of PPE-A and A2a receptor mRNA was analysed in eight monkeys displaying marked dyskinesias as a result of l-DOPA (plus carbidopa with or without entacapone) treatment, there was a significant increase in PPE-A and A2a receptor mRNA message levels in the striatum compared with animals receiving identical treatment, but displaying few or no involuntary movements, and compared with normal controls. There was no difference in striatal PPT mRNA levels in monkeys exhibiting severe dyskinesia compared with those showing little or no dyskinesia after l-DOPA treatment or to normal controls. These results suggest that prolonged l-DOPA treatment alone has no consistent effect on either the direct or indirect pathways, as judged by striatal PPT, PPE-A or A2a receptor mRNA levels in normal monkeys. However, in monkeys exhibiting marked dyskinesia resulting from chronic l-DOPA treatment, abnormal activity is detected in the indirect striato-pallidal output pathway, as judged by striatal PPE-A and A2a receptor mRNA levels, indicating an imbalance between the direct and indirect striatal pathway which may explain the emergence of dyskinesia in these animals.

Notes: : Clear and partially granulated honeys, were co-crystallized with sucrose in 3 proportions, 90:10, 85:15, 80:20, respectively. The products obtained by centrifugal filtration from both honeys were found by high-performance liquid chromatography to contain between 1% and 2% of honey. The moisture content of the products increased with the amount of honey added, whereas their powder flowability decreased. Differential scanning calorimetry showed a decrease in the overall crystallinity of the solidified products with an increase in the amount of honey added. Neither crystalline fructose nor glucose was detected by powder X-ray diffraction in any of the co-crystalline products. Glucose monohydrate crystallized on storage in some co-crystalline materials prepared from granulated honey.

Notes: Ten institutions in nine countries joined together to test the stability of resistance of 14 potato genotypes to the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans in three separate trials. Seven of the genotypes were tested in one trial involving seven locations, and all 14 were tested in two subsequent trials, each involving eight locations. Stability of resistance was tested with nonparametric tests and with an additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) model. Overall, resistance to P. infestans was robust; resistant genotypes were consistently resistant in all locations and trials. The nonparametric analysis indicated that specific genotypes were basically stable across sites for resistance. In trial 3, the Z statistic for overall stability was significant at 0·05%, indicating a significant level of interaction across the trial, but there were no significant interactions for specific genotypes in this trial. The genotype by environment (G × E) effect of the AMMI model was highly significant in both trials, but the mean square of G × E was less than 10% of the genotype effect in each trial. The first two principal components (PCA1 and PCA2) of the AMMI analyses together explained 75 and 80% of the interaction effects in trials 2 and 3, respectively. Based on both nonparametric and AMMI analyses, Ecuador and Argentina were locations of relatively high interaction effects for both trials 2 and 3, although in Ecuador this interaction was not associated with any particular potato genotype. Other locations also had high interaction effects, but these occurred in only one trial. The genotypes Chata Blanca and, to a lesser extent, Torridon were relatively unstable in trials 2 and 3, but in the case of Torridon, resistant, this did not represent a significant loss of resistance.

Notes: The first use of a new program, EDINP, is reported. This program allows the constrained refinement of molecules in a crystal structure with neutron diffraction powder data. The structures of p-C6F4Br2 and p-C6F4I2 are determined by packing considerations and then refined with EDINP. Refinement is stable and rapid, and the data are sufficiently accurate to allow the choice of the correct minimum in the presence of a number of false minima. A fuller report on EDINP is planned.
