Notes: 1. In the present study we examined the effects of a new Ca2+ channel blocker (lomerizine), an antimigraine drug, on cerebral cortical blood flow (CBF) in anaesthetized rats (laser Doppler flowmetry) and on vertebral blood flow in anaesthetized beagle dogs (electromagnetic flowmeter).2. Lomerizine (1.25–10 mg/kg, p.o.) dose-dependently increased CBF in rats without affecting blood pressure (BP) or heart rate (HR).3. The plasma concentration of lomerizine (free base) in anaesthetized rats at 30 and 60 min after the initial administration of 5 mg/kg, p.o., times at which there was a significant increase in CBF, was similar to that reported in healthy subjects receiving lomerizine at 10 mg (2 × 5 mg)/day, p.o., a dose that significantly reduces the frequency and mean duration of headache attacks.4. Flunarizine (10 mg/kg, p.o.) did not increase CBF significantly. Flunarizine (20 mg/kg, p.o.) did not increase CBF, but did decrease BP 30–120 min after its administration.5. Lomerizine (2.5 and 5 mg/kg, intraduodenally) dose- dependently increased vertebral blood flow in dogs without significantly changing BP or HR. With 10 mg/kg intraduodenal lomerazine, vertebral blood flow remained elevated from 20 to 240 min after administration and BP was decreased from 20 to 120 min.6. Thus, lomerizine had a greater effect on CBF than on BP and HR and, therefore, it may be clinically effective in con-ditions associated with circulatory disturbances in the brain, such as migraine, without producing systemic effects (e.g. hypotension) generally seen with other Ca2+ channel blockers.

Notes: Abstract The electronic state and structural configuration of the intercalated iodine species in stage-1, I-Bi2Sr2Ca n−1Cu n O x (n = l, 2), have been studied through polarization-resolved Raman and129I Mössbauer spectroscopy. The polarization dependence of the Raman spectra and the Mössbauer measurement confirmed the dominant species to be triiodide ions, I 3 − , with alignment of these linear molecules either along thea- orb-axis in the host crystals. Transport measurements such as thermoelectric power and Hall coefficient clearly indicated that hole carriers are doped into the CuO2 planes upon intercalation, by whichT c of the host superconductor is changed. Furthermore, based on resistivity measurements in a magnetic field, we suggest that the iodine intercalation leads to a decrease of the anisotropy both in normal and superconducting states, suppressing the extremely two-dimensional character of the Bi2Sr2Ca n−1Cu n O x systems.

Notes: Abstract 129I Mössbauer measurements have been performed on unidirectionally stretched iodinedoped polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) films which are widely used as optical polarizers. In the films iodine is observed to be in the form of I−, I 3 − , and I 5 − and the stretch of the films increases the abundance of the polyiodides, I 3 − and I 5 − . In the stretched PVA films, it has become clear that the linear polyiodides lie parallel to the stretching direction.

Notes: Abstract A nonconjugated conducting polymer (1,4-rans-polyisoprene) at different iodine doping levels has been studied with the 27.7-keV Mössbauer resonance of129I. At the light doping level, almost all iodines are covalently bonding to the carbon atoms, breaking the double bonds of the main chain. At the medium doping level, other iodine species are found, which are idendified as anion species, l−, l 3 − and l 3 − .At the heavy doping level, polyiodide anions, l 3 − and l 5 − , increase as compared to the covalently bonding iodine atoms and addtionally molecular iodine l2 exists.

Notes: Abstract The129I Mössbauer spectroscopy has been applied to iodine-doped highly conducting polyacetylene. For the unstretched polyacetylene films, the iodine species of I−, I 3 − and I 5 − are observed. The polyiodides have symmetrical charge population. In addition to these anions, a small amount of iodines is covalently bonding to the carbon atoms, breaking the double bonds of the main chain. For the stretched polyacetylene films, the measurements were done under the condition that the stretch direction was parallel or perpendicular to the direction of incident ψ-rays. The relative change of the intensities of the Mössbauer quadrupole-split lines reveals the alignment of the polyiodine anions in the stretched film.

Notes: Abstract 129I and125Te Mössbauer measurements have been performed on unidirectionally stretched iodine-doped polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films which are widely used as optical polarizers. From the129I measurements iodine is observed to be in the form of linear polyiodides, I 3 − and I 5 − , lying parallel to the stretch direction of the PVA films. From the125I emission Mössbauer measurements the structural arrangement of the iodine-PVA complex is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The129I Mössbauer study applied to the iodine-doped polythiophene and poly(3-methylthiophene) films revealed that the iodine consists of pentaiodide, triiodide, and/or I2 molecules. The abundance ratios of these iodine species vary with the doping level.

Notes: Abstract Iodine-intercalated high-T c oxide Bi2Sr2CaCu2O y was studied at 16 K using129I Mössbauer effect. The Mössbauer spectrum shows the presence of I 3 − ions which have an almost linear structure and a symmetrical charge population, and no other iodine species are found. In addition to the electronic structure of each iodine species, the analysis of the intensity ratios of the quadrupole-split transitions reveals information about the anisotropy of the recoilless fraction for each iodine atom. It cannot exclude the possibility that the I 3 − ion is slightly asymmetrical and/or bent with consideration to small interactions between the I 3 − ion and the neighboring Bi-O layers.

Notes: Abstract The preparation of Mg3 129TeO6 sources for iodine Mössbauer spectroscopy is described, and the after-effect in128Te(n,γ)129 129mTe neutron activation is discussed. The results show that the annealing procedure is necessary for eliminating the after-effect induced by the captureγ-rays.
