    Notes: Abstract —Deception Island is characterized by small magnitude local events with constant energy flux and very low stress drop. To obtain information about its origin, an interevent time series of 546 events, corresponding to an observational period of two month, has been analyzed. From a statistical point of view, data satisfies a Weibull distribution and presents clustering. A rescaled range analysis reveals that data are not independent, i.e. have memory, and the correlation dimension saturates at 2.2; as a consequence, the system can be modeled as a nonlinear iterative equation with three degrees of freedom that presents chaotic behavior. Taking into account that the average interevent time is of the order of 130 minutes, too short to be only due to tectonic activity, the above results indicate that some other mechanism may coexist with the regional tectonic one. According to several geological and geophysical observations, we suggest that most of the local events may be originated by pressure waves generated by a sudden change of phase, of sea and fresh water infiltrated into the main fractures and faults and also from shallow and confined water-saturated layers.

    Notes: Summary We have cloned and determined the nucleotide sequence of a complementary DNA (cDNA) encoded by a newly isolated human tropomyosin gene and expressed in liver. Using the leastsquare method of Fitch and Margoliash, we investigated the nucleotide divergences of this sequence and those published in the literature, which allowed us to clarify the classification and evolution of the tropomyosin genes expressed in vertebrates. Tropomyosin undergoes alternative splicing on three of its nine exons. Analysis of the exons not involved in differential splicing showed that the four human tropomyosin genes resulted from a duplication that probably occurred early, at the time of the amphibian radiation. The study of the sequences obtained from rat and chicken allowed a classification of these genes as one of the types identified for humans. The divergence of exons 6 and 9 indicates that functional pressure was exerted on these sequences, probably by an interaction with proteins in skeletal muscle and perhaps also in smooth muscle; such a constraint was not detected in the sequences obtained from nonmuscle cells. These results have led us to postulate the existence of a protein in smooth muscle that may be the counterpart of skeletal muscle troponin. We show that different kinds of functional pressure were exerted on a single gene, resulting in different evolutionary rates and different convergences in some regions of the same molecule. Codon usage analysis indicates that there is no strict relationship between tissue types (and hence the tRNA precursor pool) and codon usage. G+C content is characteristic of a gene and does not change significantly during evolution. These results are in good agreement with an isochore composition of the genome, and thus suggest a similar chromosomal environment in chicken, rat, and human.

    Notes: We study the dissociation of sodium chloride in an environment of simple point charged model waters using a stochastic transition path sampling method. The method is able to analyze the structure and dynamics (including transition states) of rare events without any a priori assumption. After an ensemble of reactive paths between stable states has been constructed, a set of transition state configurations can be derived. Technical details of the simulation are discussed. We observe that the structure found from the ensemble of transition state configurations is qualitatively equal to the structure obtained when the interionic distance is assumed as the reaction coordinate. We also discuss energetic aspects of the ion pair dissociation: A free energy profile of the dynamical process reveals the contribution of solvent degrees of freedom to the reaction barrier. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Dynamics of liquid water and its isotopes when adsorbed inside carbon nanotubes of different radii is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Water molecules have been modeled with a flexible simple point charged (SPC) potential while carbon forces were accounted for with Lennard–Jones-type potentials. Diffusive behavior and the librational, rotational, intra- and intermolecular motions of the constrained molecules have been investigated by means of the spectral densities computed from atomic velocity autocorrelation functions. The results show in all cases significant new vibrational bands and frequency shifts absent in bulk water. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
