    Notes: Abstract Holtzman (Sprague-Dawley) rats which were injected in amounts ranging from 0.50–3.0 mg/kg i.p. of methamphetamine avoided a 0.1% saccharin solution which had been paired temporally with the injection, and drank water in a subsequent two-bottle choice situation under non-drug conditions. The aversion persisted for the duration of the experiment, which lasted and obtained whether the animals were fluid-deprived or fluid-satiated. Saline-injected controls, on the other hand, exhibited a 90% saccharin solution preference. Rats which received 0.25 mg/kg contiguous with the drug, or animals given 3.0 mg/kg paired with water, exhibited as extreme a preference for the saccharin solution as did the saline controls. It was concluded that neither a drugmediated taste quality change nor physiological cues associated with thirst were adequate axplanations for the avoidance behavior exhibited, but that the drug was perceived as a noxious stimulus at levels above 0.50 mg/kg under the conditions described above.

    Notes: Abstract Three experiments were performed on Sprague-Dawley derived rats in which 3.0 mg/kg, i.p., injections of methamphetamine were paired with either, (1) a distinctive spatial enclosure, i.e., either a black or gray portion of a shuttle box with discriminably different flooring, (2) the enclosure plus 0.1% saccharin solution availability in the home cage, or (3) the enclosure plus 0.1% saccharin solution availability in that area. Following three drug pairings which alternated with saline injections paired with a different enclosure or enclosure plus H2O availability, a choice of either spatial (1), or spatial plus gustatory stimuli (2,3) which included the original CS's, were presented under non-drug, non-injection conditions. Control groups received saline injections each day under identical conditions. No aversion to the enclosed area, which had been paired with the drug was demonstrated under (1), gustatory (P=0.005) but not spatial aversion was in evidence in the second paradigm, and spatial (P=0.01) and gustatory (P〈0.01) aversion was exhibited in the last study. It was concluded that subsequent aversion to distinctive spatial enclosures following methamphetamine injections was not as strong an effect as similar aversions to gustatory stimuli. Furthermore, the effect only obtained to neutral and not to preferred spatial areas at the dose level tested and in the apparatus used in those studies.

    Notes: Abstract Learning environments in a sample of communal families and a sample of two-parent married nuclear families are compared for both intragroup and acrossgroup differences likely to influence childrearing and socialization outcomes. Learning environment variables include family and demographic backgrounds of parents; newborn health, developmental, and feeding patterns; personnel, size, and density in households; caretaking patterns; work loads and domestic tasks for mothers; kin and social supports for mothers; beliefs and value orientations of the parents; and change and mobility in families. Creedal and domestic types of communes also differed. The learning environment variables are interdependent with each other and with demographic features of the groups, and there is rapid change in communal lifestyles; both these features suggest that intragroup and longitudinal data are essential for generalizing about the effects of lifestyles on young children.
