In the synthesis of 2,5-bis-ethylenimino-benzoquinone from benzoquinone and ethylenimine we isolated as the main product in addition to the desired quinone a white insoluble compound: the internal salt of 2,5-bis-ethylenimino-hydroquinone. We believe this product to represent a new type of compound, since from the series of aminophenols no internal salt seems to have been described. Thus amongst other amines, trimethylenimine, pyrrolidine, dimethylamine give the expected aminoquinones; with piperidine alone bis-piperidino-hydroquinone is formed in considerable quantity, the latter not being an internal salt. Naphthoquinone reacting with ethylenimine gives a quinone derivative. With C, C-dimethylethylenimine a disubstituted quinone has been isolated too, while C-methylethylenimine, in analogy with ethylenimine itself, also forms an internal salt of a hydroquinone, namely 2,5-bis-(C-methylethylenimino)-hydroquinone.
