    Notes: Abstract Subpicosecond pulse generation has been examined in synchronously pumped mode-locked ring dye laser systems. These include hybrid and composite absorber/gain media arrangements as well as a simple synchronous cavity. The shortest pulses recorded were 0.3 ps for the hybrid system, and this has been shown to be critically dependent on the positioning of the absorber jet in the centre of the cavity to better than 50 μm. Stable operation for subpicosecond pulse generation has been achieved in the ring configuration with greater wavelength tunability and higher average power conversion efficiency than with conventional cavity arrangements.

    Notes: The effect of applying an electric field across a quasi-phase-matched frequency doubling lithium tantalate waveguide has been investigated. The waveguide was fabricated by a two-stage ion exchange process in pyrophosphoric acid. An electric field of 2 kV/mm was found to shift the phase matching wavelength by 0.05 nm. It is estimated that more optimized waveguides could produce wavelength shifts of ±4 nm for an applied electric field of ±20 kV/mm and could compensate for temperature variations of ±67 °C. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate modulation for GaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) waveguide modulators on silicon substrates. The modulators, which were fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy, were operated at wavelengths of 890–910 nm, with greater than 20 dB modulation obtained at λ=900 nm for a reverse bias of 2.5 V. Photocurrent measurements were performed on GaAs MQWs grown on Si and compared with results obtained for GaAs MQWs grown on GaAs. The structures were integrated with GaAs/AlGaAs waveguides and are suitable for integration with silicon-based electronics.

    Notes: We have developed modified poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) to improve its performance in organic electroluminescent devices. Encapsulated single-layer devices with this PPV on indium–tin oxide and a calcium cathode have been operated in air for 〉7000 h at 20 °C and 〉1100 h at 80 °C without noticeable degradation. Devices fabricated with this PPV, a conducting polymer layer as anode, and a sputtered low work-function alloy as cathode have efficiencies of over 2 lm/W, brightnesses of 〉600 Cd/m2 at 4 V, and lifetimes of 〉1400 h driven at ∼100 Cd/m2 initial brightness. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) is investigated for its potential as a low work-function photocathode for high brightness e-beam applications. Thin films of LaB6 at room temperature are shown to have quantum efficiencies of 0.2×10−3 at 442 nm excitation but readily form an inhibiting oxide. This oxide is easily removed by in situ 500 eV Ar+ ion sputtering, which restores photoemission for over 30 min at an oxygen partial pressure of 10−9 Torr.

    Notes: Silicon Mach–Zehnder waveguide modulators have been fabricated and operation characterized at the wavelength of 1.3 μm. Device operation is based on the free-carrier-induced change in the refractive index of silicon. Modulation depths of −4.9 dB and response times τresponse〈50 ns have been achieved at λ=1.3 μm for an injected carrier density of 6.5×1017 cm−3.

    Notes: Summary Structure of breeding bird communities was compared among four habitat types representative of stages present in most old-field successions in the eastern deciduous forest formation of North America. The successional catagories, defined by vegetational structure, were designated herbaceous (type A habitats) herb, shrub and sapling (type B), young forest (type C), and older forest (type D). Density of breeding birds was lowest in A habitats, rose sharply in B habitats and reached a maximum in D habitats. Species richness and number of feeding guild showed similar patterns. Mean number of species per guilds was highest in D habitats. Generalist feeding guilds were predominant in type A and B habitats, primarily due to the importance of the graminivore-insectivore guild. Specialist guilds increased in importance with succession due to addition of several insectivorous guilds in later successional stages. Patterns of occurrence of individual feeding guilds are analyzed and discussed with respect to changes in vegetational structure. Variance in community structure was generally highest in A habitats and lowest in D habitats; this is discussed in relation to the evolution of “saturated”, coadapted communities.

    Notes: Summary The relationship between sucrose concentration of nectar and volume uptake rate by the butterflies Agraulis vanillae (Nymphalidae) and Phoebis sennae (Pieridae) was examined. Recent theoretical models simulating feeding energetics of nectarivores have assumed that this volume uptake rate is produced by a constant but undetermined pressure drop (the difference between pressure at the proximal and distal ends of the feeding channel) at all nectar concentrations. These models predict that nectar of 20–25% sucrose maximizes the rate of energy intake and should thus be preferred by nectarivores. Data collected for Agraulis and Phoebis falsify this pressure drop assumption; both species produce greater pressure drops with increasing nectar concentration. In addition, males of both species produce greater suction pressure and uptake rates than females. This results in greater rates of energy intake for males of both species. The volume uptake rates produced by each species differ from those predicted by the models. This produces a maximal rate of energy intake at 35–40% sucrose rather than 20–25%. The empirically determined relationship between energy intake rate and nectar concentration esembles that predicted for discontinuous nectar feeders such as hummingbirds more closely than the relationship predicted for continuous suction feeders, suggesting that other basic assumptions about the feeding mechanism of butterflies should be critically examined.
