Notes: The details of a simple optoelectronic cut-off device for controlling an electrophoresis apparatus are given. The device monitors the progress of the colored indicator dye as it passes through a point in the gel matrix and terminates an electrophoretic run by turning off the power supply when the indicator dye arrives at a location predetermined by the researcher. This switch frees the worker from having to constantly monitor the terminal stages of the experiment.

Notes: Abstract A high-resolution, ultrasonic (12–89 MHz) acoustic impedance technique has been used to investigate the order parameter collective modes in superfluid3He-B over a pressure range of 0–15 bar and in magnetic fields up to 180 mT. In agreement with earlier experiments, theJ=2 real squashing mode has been observed to split into five components in small magnetic fields. However, contrary to earlier theoretical estimates, the Zeeman shifts have been found to become extremely nonlinear as the magnetic field is increased. The extent of this nonlinearity is largest at low pressures and at temperatures close toT c. In comparison with recent theoretical work, the nonlinear Zeeman shifts may be explained as a result of two effects. First, there is a significant distortion of the B-phase energy gap in large magnetic fields. Second, there is an important coupling between the sameJ zsubstates of the differentJ modes. In this sense the nonlinear evolution of the real squashing mode constitutes the observation of the Paschen-Back effect in3He-B. A comparison of the observed Zeeman shifts with theoretical expressions has yielded information about particle-particle and particle-hole interaction effects in the superfluid. In the limitT → 0 and above a threshold field, the real squashing mode has been found to possess additional structure. TheJ z=0 substate has been observed to split into a doublet. The separation between the two components of the doublet is of the order of 100–200 kHz and remains independent of the magnetic field. The origin of the doublet may be understood in terms of a recent theory which postulates a texture-dependent collective mode frequency. Further, at extremely small fields the effects due to dispersion of the real squashing modes have been found to be important. The magnitude of the dispersion-induced mode splitting in zero field is found to be consistent with theoretical predictions. TheJ=2 squashing mode has also been studied in the presence of a magnetic field. TheJ z=0 state of the squashing mode is observed to shift to lower temperatures in a magnetic field. An additional field dependence of the observed acoustic impedance is interpreted as the evolution of theJ z=−1, −2 states, but appears to be inconsistent with theoretical predictions.

Notes: Abstract The zero sound attenuation, α0(ω,T, P), of normal liquid 3 He has been studied over a broad range of frequency (ω/2π = 8 – 50 MHz). Data has been collected at a constant temperature (T ≈ 1.1 mK) which is just above the superfluid transition temperature, T c , when the liquid is near a pressure, P, of 1 bar. The results are compared to Landau's prediction in the quantum limit, k B T ≪ ħω ≪ k B T F , where α0(ω,T,P) = α′(P) T 2[l + (ħω/2πk B T)2]. Deviations from Landau's prediction are compared to the results of other workers and are discussed with respect to additional (unidentified) extrinsic background effects and (possible) intrinsic scattering mechanisms due to fluctuations in the liquid.

Notes: Abstract Single crystals of UPt3 have been prepared. The crystals are shown to have a superconducting transition temperature of 526±2 mK with a transition width of 12.6 ± 0.1 mK. The measured x-ray rocking curve FWHM of the (002) peak is 180 ± 5 arcseconds, compared to a theoretical minimum linewidth as predicted for a perfect UPt3 single crystal of 90 arcseconds. The x-ray characterization, susceptibility, residual resistivity ratio (RRR) and impurity concentration results are presented.

Notes: Abstract We have made accurate measurements of the phase velocity in liquid3He at 0.6 bar near Tc using a path length modulation technique. The frequency used in this measurement (113 MHz) is much higher than any of the collective mode frequencies and well above the threshold for pair-breaking, ω≫Δ and ω 〉 2Δ0. We have observed a sharp but small linear increase in the phase velocity below Tc and a small decrease from the expected behavior in the normal fluid region very close to the transition temperature.

Notes: Abstract Finite-amplitude acoustic waves have been propagated in liquid3He and4He. The acoustic cell has been operated at 83, 250, and 420 MHz and down to 17 mK. Our measurements of the anharmonic effects are in agreement with theoretical predictions and with previous experimental work that investigated a restricted temperature range.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, χ(T), of two samples of the S=1 linear-chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4), known as NENP, has been measured from 400 K to 264 µK. Our measurements are in agreement with existing results of other researchers who worked above 1.2 K. Below 1.2 K, χ(T) increases with decreasing temperature. The results suggest that this increase is intrinsic to the NENP and is not a consequence of a single source of paramagnetic impurities in the samples.

Notes: Abstract Two nuclear-demagnetization cryostats, each containing 173 mol of copper coolant in a 8 T magnetic field and based on an Oxford Instruments model 1000 dilution refrigerator, have been under development at the University of Florida Microkelvin Laboratory for studies of nuclear magnetic ordering in metals and in solid3He, properties of superfluid3He at T≈0, and mesoscopic systems, and for development of primary thermometers based on population differences in nuclear quadrupole systems. The performance of the first cryostat is analyzed with emphasis on improvements to be made.

Notes: Using a capacitive pressure gauge, the pressure of a constant-volume 4He-sample was measured in the temperature range 1.5–120 mK, at pressures of 25.3 bar (on the melting curve) and 26.0 bar. A gradual pressure change occurring as a consequence of the ideal gas behavior of vacancies, or a pressure anomaly corresponding to a Bose-Einstein condensation of the vacancies, was not observed. Within the sensitivity of the pressure gauge (2 Pa), this result sets upper limits to the density of zero-point vacancies.
