    Notes: Abstract  Cover systems are widely used to safeguard landfills and contaminated sites. The evaluation of the water balance is crucial for the design of landfill covers. The Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP) model of the US Environmental Protection Agency was developed for this purpose. This paper discusses some limitations of version 2 of this model and some operational difficulties for the use of this model in Germany, which has been developed for the United States. The model results are tested against field data of the water balance, measured on test fields on the Georgswerder landfill in Hamburg. Theoretically, HELP considers gravitational forces as driving forces of water flow only. Therefore capillary barriers cannot be simulated. Furthermore, the formation of and the flow through macropores are not considered, a main critical process that the diminishes the effectiveness of compacted soil liners. In the output comparison, the matching of measured and simulated data is quite good for lateral drainage, but failed for surface runoff and liner leakage through compacted soil liners. A further validation study is planned for HELP version 3 using a broader range of test field data.

    Notes: Summary Between 1969 und 1989 conservative surgery for kidney tumors was performed in 123 patients. In 49 patients there was an imperative indication for a parenchyma-sparing operation because nephrectomy would have made dialysis obligatory. Thirty-five of these 49 patients show no signs of tumor progression after a mean follow-up of 4.5 years. Known metastases were present in 3 of 6 patients who died as a result of their tumors. In two patients there was a recurrence after 1 and 5 years, respectively, requiring a second organ-preserving operation. In one further patient we suspect that multiple small tumor lesions may be present 2 years after the first operation. In 74 patients with a healthy contralateral kidney the tumor was enucleated by choice (elective indication). Sixty-eight of these 74 patients show no signs of tumor progression after a mean follow-up period of 3.3 years. One patient died from tumor metastases. Two patients had tumor recurrence, requiring nephrectomy and enucleation, respectively. Fifty-seven enucleated tumors were available for image analysis DNA cytometry. Only the two patients with a hypertriploid tumor died from their cancer.

    Notes: Abstract In a retrospective study 108 patients (average age: 56.5 years) could be evaluated, who were treated with a fascial sling plasty because of pure genuine stress incontinence (n=90) or combined stress/urge incontinence (n=18). 72 patients (66.6%) had recurrent incontinence after previous surgery. The average follow-up was 5 years. Patients without previous surgery related to urinary incontinence (n=36) showed the best results and remained continent in 78% (n=28). Patients with 1 to 4 (average 1.4) previous surgical procedures because of incontinence (n=52) remained continent in 62% (n=32), and in those who had between 1 and 6 (average 3.6) previous surgical procedures using even alloplastic material the continence rate dropped to 60% (n=12). In patients with pure genuine stress incontinence the overall success rate was 74.7%, whereas in cases with a proven preoperative urge component, the success rate dropped to 37%. Fascial sling plasty is a very useful procedure to treat patients with primary and especially recurrent urinary incontinence, when a functional urethra is missing. However, one has to be very cautious with patients in whom a preoperative urodynamic evaluation shows detrusor instability.
