Notes: Summary Recent studies show that in diabetic subjects an increase of plasma fibrinogen concentration is associated with a high risk of cardiovascular complications. Environmental and genetic factors contribute to the plasma fibrinogen concentration. Several studies indicate a relation between the polymorphism in the 5 ′ region of the β-fibrinogen gene and plasma protein concentrations and in diabetes the possible influence of hyperglycaemia on fibrinogen is still debated. In this study we investigated these relations. Hind III polymorphism was evaluated by a polymerase chain reaction-technique. On the basis of the observed allelic combination of fibrinogen β-gene polymorphism and the existence of poor metabolic control (glycated haemoglobin ≥ 7.5 %), 50 Type II diabetic patients were selected. They were divided into three groups according to their β-gene polymorphism (α1α1: n = 20, α1α2: n = 15, α2α2: n = 15) and then intensive insulin therapy was started. After 3 months of intensive treatment, the improvement in glycaemic control was equivalent, in terms of glycated haemoglobin, in all the three groups. A fibrinogen reduction was observed in α1α2 and α2α2 but not in α1α1 subjects. These results underline a possible relation between fibrinogen genotypes and glycaemic control in determining plasma fibrinogen concentrations in diabetic patients. Notes: Abstract Thermal diffusivity of various compounds used as coupling fluids in photopyroelectric experiments have been measured at room temperature and at 80 K. Measurements on high vacuum silicone grease have also been performed as a function of temperature and an increase in the thermal diffusivity values with decreasing temperature has been found. Two phase transitions in the LiTaO3 pyroelectric transducer have been observed at 200 and 225 K.

Notes: Photothermal techniques allow, under particular experimental conditions, the simultaneous determination of specific heat, thermal conductivity, and thermal diffusivity. A comparison has been made between measurements performed with the gas-microphone (P) configuration and the photopyroelectric (PPE) one at a liquid-crystal second-order phase transition. An increase in the sensitivity with respect to thermal parameter variation has been observed in the case of PPE.

Notes: Subgap optical absorption investigations have been used to study the influence of increasing ion dose on the properties of ion implanted layers of Si and GaAs. Beside the spectral region corresponding to the band edge region, a second region at lower energy, also exhibiting an exponential behavior but with a substantially larger value of the inverse logarithmic slope, has been observed in all the investigated samples. A common trend has been observed for ion implanted Si and GaAs in the dependence of the values of the lower energy region inverse logarithmic slope as a function of the implantation dose, and it depended on the presence or not of amorphous material in the implanted layer. The results are discussed in terms of a possible evolution of gap states responsible for the observed features.

Notes: A detailed description of an experimental configuration based on photothermal deflection spectroscopy (PDS) and transmittance techniques that enables high sensitivity room temperature absorption measurements over a spectral region extending between 300 nm and 3.4 μm is reported. It is shown that the simultaneously determined PDS and transmittance spectra can be processed to eliminate completely the interference induced oscillations in the spectra which are observed when the film refractive index differs substantially from the one of the substrate. A configuration based on the photopyroelectric and transmittance techniques, though less sensitive than the previous one, is shown to be suitable for the same kind of measurements at cryogenic temperatures. Absorption bands in implanted Si between 2.8 and 3.4 μm have thus been detected and tentatively associated with multiphonon defect assisted absorption bands. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A front detection photopyroelectric configuration has been used to study the nonlinear heat transport processes that take place in the vicinity of the smectic A–nematic phase transition of the 9 CB liquid crystal. An increase in the sensitivity of this technique with respect to other photothermal techniques as far as the phase transition detection is concerned has been obtained. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary HIV-1 acquires cell membrane proteins during budding. The cell membrane proteins (CMP) profile of laboratory HIV-1 strains grown in different host cells was established, by using an immobilized antibody capture (IAC), to verify whether CMPs present on HIV-1 correlate with its host cell origin. HIV-1 grown in different cell lines incorporates cell markers such as CD3, CD19, CD14, CD31 and IL 2-R, according to the distinctive expression of these antigens on the host cells. Furthermore, also T-tropic and monocytotropic HIV-1 strains display host cell specific markers, supporting the hypothesis that virus associated CMPs are a marker of host cell origin.

Notes: Abstract The theory of the front configuration with semitransparent sensor for a five layer photopyroelectric cell is presented. The particular cases suitable for phase-transition investigations are derived. An application to the study of the first-order phase transition of lauric fatty acid supports the validity of the theoretical model.

Notes: Abstract High resolution measurements have been performed with a photopyroelectric (PPE) technique to study the static and dynamic thermal parameters behaviour in the critical region of different liquid and solid samples. In particular the specific heat (c), the thermal diffusivity (D) and the thermal conductivity (k) have been simultaneously determined in the critical region around the antiferromagnetic/paramagnetic (AP) phase transition occurring in FeF2 and around the Smectic-A/Nematic (AN) phase transition occurring in the 8S5 liquid crystal. The high resolution of the measuring technique has allowed the determination of thec andD critical exponents and amplitude ratio of their critical terms.
